Where generations of Exeter natives get their education
A major draw of Jacksonwald is its schools, so much so that it’s the number one reason locals stay or come back to start families. Allison Kercher, a native to the area and local Realtor with Pagoda Realty, speaks from experience, saying, “My husband and I actually grew up in Exeter and moved back to raise our kids here. A lot of the people I grew up with are now teachers, administrators, and moms who help in the lunchrooms of the very same schools we went to as kids.” Students are zoned for Jacksonwald Elementary School, which earns a B-minus from Niche. Students can then move on to Exeter Township Junior High School, which has a B rating from Niche, followed by Exeter Township Senior High School, which earns an A-minus rating from Niche and the title of the second-best public high school in Berks County. The senior high offers AP courses, dual enrollment and a for-credit internship program that collaborates with local community partners and business leaders.
Bring the kids down to Farming Ridge Park in Jacksonwald.
Wide open spaces and Berk’s County’s largest pool
Farming Ridge Park is a local green space on the eastern end of Jacksonwald that sports a small playground, two soccer fields and a large pavilion for family picnics and casual group events. Dogs are welcome in the space as long as they are leashed.
About 2 miles away, Carsonia Park offers locals more amenities, like fenced-in basketball courts, a baseball diamond and an expansive fishing pond with a walking path along its perimeter. There’s also a picnic area in a gazebo surrounded by open grass fields. Adjacent to the park is the Antietam Valley Recreation & Community Center, which is home to the largest community pool in Berks County. Residents must sign up for a membership to use the recreation center’s facilities, but Carsonia Park remains free to the public.
For authentic Italian cuisine, head to Musso's in Jacksonwald.
Top-rated dives and one-stop shops
Although the area can sometimes feel far from dining options, Musso’s is a local favorite right inside the neighborhood; both its dining room and take-out business are consistently busy. The Italian restaurant is known for its freshly made pizzas and homemade soups that come in hefty portions.
Just a 6-minute drive away is Exeter Family Restaurant, a top-rated diner that’s open 24/7. The restaurant serves a diverse menu, ranging from classic American breakfast fare to hand-cut steaks and fresh seafood served alongside a 40-item, all-you-can-eat soup and salad bar. Much like Musso’s, the portions are quite large, so a to-go box is usually in order.
Exeter Commons is the closest shopping center for locals to get daily essentials. Residents can pick up groceries at Giant or Aldi or shop at brand names like Target, Five Below and Lowe’s. Boscov’s also has an outlet store in Exeter Commons, and directly across the street from the center is a Boscov’s department store.
US 422 and I-176 just around the corner
Residents heavily rely on cars to get around the area, but Kercher says that doesn’t bother them because “everyone flocks to this area because it’s so central. There’s easy access to the interstate, which means quick access to major cities like Philadelphia and Allentown.” Jacksonwald residents only have to drive 2 miles to reach U.S. Route 422, which takes them straight to Philadelphia and the Philadelphia International Airport within an hour. Or they can drive 4 miles to Interstate 176 – known locally as the Morgantown Expressway – that leads to Interstate 76 (Pennsylvania Turnpike).
GreatSchools:
The GreatSchools Rating helps parents compare schools within a state based on a variety of school quality indicators and provides a helpful picture of how effectively each school serves all of its students. Ratings are on a scale of 1 (below average) to 10 (above average) and can include test scores, college readiness, academic progress, advanced courses, equity, discipline and attendance data. We also advise parents to visit schools, consider other information on school performance and programs, and consider family needs as part of the school selection process.
