Peace and quiet
Residents and visitors to Guthrie County won't find a single stoplight within its 593 square miles. What they will find is beautiful views of the Iowa countryside, lots of outdoor recreation and an abundance of shopping and dining options. The county comprises 10 incorporated cities, each with its own characteristics, yet all providing residents with peace and solitude. "Many people come out here to buy 20 to 30 acres of land," says broker associate Cary Claiborne of Iowa Realty Ankeny, who owned a restaurant in the county for 20 years. Streetscapes vary between the neighborhoods, but most are narrow, lined with lush vegetation and trees, and some have sidewalks.
County offers wildlife conservation and a historical village
Throughout the county, wildlife conservation spots such as Milo Ray State Wildlife Area and Elk Grove Wildlife Management Area create protected spaces for plants and animals. The 81-acre Nations Bridge Park offers spots for camping, kayaking, hiking, bird watching, fishing and disc golf. The 89-mile Raccoon River Valley Trail is a multi-use recreational pathway that winds its way through the Middle and North Raccoon River corridors with areas of prairie and canopies of timber that remind visitors of what Iowa was like in the 1870s. A popular educational destination is the Guthrie County Historical Village and Museum on 4 acres in Panora. The museum features 12 buildings, an old caboose, a Pullman Observation and Cafe Car, and exhibits that reveal the history of Guthrie County and Iowa from the 1850s to the early-20th Century.
Homes span the decades
"You'll find century-old farmhouses, homes from the 50s, 70s and 90s and new construction," Claiborne says. "There's a great mixture of styles to suit every taste." Colonial revivals, bungalows and ranch-style are common architectural designs. Tudor homes are found in Casey, while historical Victorians are scattered throughout Panora. Additionally, the communities of Lake Panorama and Diamondhead Lake offer modern, ranch-style homes with stunning views of their respective lakes. Lots start at less than ¼ acres and go to multiple acres, depending on location, and most homes have garages. Because the county is so spread out and many newcomers want to buy land, prices range from $71,000 to $1 million.
High school offers DMAC
Guthrie County is served by the Guthrie Community School District and the Panorama Community School District, both offering open enrollment. Students can start their education at Guthrie Center Elementary School, which has a B from NIche. Adair-Casey & Guthrie Center Junior High School has a B-minus grade. Gurthrie Center High School has a B-minus grade and offers DMAC, the opportunity for high school and home-schooled students to earn college credit.
County has own hospital
Guthrie County Hospital serves the community. Interstate 80 is the nearest freeway, and Iowa highways 4 and 44 run through the area. Public transportation is not available in Guthrie County, so most residents are car-dependent. Downtown Des Moines is a 40-mile drive via I-80, and Des Moines International Airport is a 45-mile drive, also via I-80.
Guthrie County Fair
Guthrie County hosts its own annual county fair on Labor Day Weekend. Visitors from all over Des Moines come to enjoy a parade, a rodeo, carnival food, rides and much more.
Lots of shopping and dining in the county
There are a variety of shops and restaurants across the county. In Panorama, locals will find the latest fashions at Bella Sorella Boutique. Stuart's Flowers & Gifts in Stuart is where residents can pick up the beautiful blooms for their loved ones. The county has many eateries. Claiborne recommends The Port on Lake Panorama Restaurant Bar & Inn for its fine American cuisine and unbeatable views and Zipp's Pizzaria in Adair for a quick slice.
Crime is low
Guthrie County received a 1 out of 10 on the CAP Index for overall crime, indicating that the likelihood of incidents is very low.
