Quaker roots and easy-going lifestyle in Jamestown
Settled in 1752 by European Quakers and founded by the Mendenhall family in 1816, Guilford County’s Jamestown today is known for its easy-going lifestyle, friendly community and variety in architecture. “It’s got a quaint, homestyle feel,” says Jamestown Planning Director Anna Hawryluk. “People walk everywhere around here, especially on the brick sidewalks downtown near local businesses and restaurants.” Neoclassical-inspired buildings like Jamestown Public Library and historic landmarks like the 200-year-old Mendenhall House can be seen near Main Street, and public benches are scattered throughout nearby parks where residents love gathering for events, classes or just to chat.

Getting together for carols and cocoa at Christmas on Main
Every Wednesday in December, the Jamestown Business Association holds its annual Christmas on Main event, where locals gaze at light-decorated buildings along Main Street, and businesses in the area stay open later; folks catch trolley rides to each store, sip on hot chocolate while humming along to Christmas Carols and take time to visit Santa Claus at The Soap Lady Store. Wrenn Miller Park draws big crowds for its Music in the Park series, running from May to October; local food trucks and beer vendors set up near the park’s fifth-of-a-mile sidewalk loop, and visitors bust out dance moves in front of the park’s brick amphitheater.
Ranch-style and Colonial homes in Jamestown
“It’s hard to pin down all the housing styles in Jamestown because there’s so much diversity in properties,” says Todd Turner, Realtor for All About You Realty, located near the neighborhood. Midcentury brick ranch-style homes here average $275,000, while late 20th-century Colonial-Revival houses average around $255,000. These properties sit on half to two-acre lots surrounded by groves of black oak trees and feature long, concrete driveways that lead out to sidewalk-less streets. Two-story Dutch Colonial and New Traditional homes built between the 80s and 90s typically range from $400,000 to $630,000 and sit closer together in cul-de-sacs; these up-to-five-bedroom homes feature tiled dormer windows, long porches with white rocking chairs and wooden decks in fenced-in yards. Turner says new construction is booming in subdivisions like Sagemont which house one to two-story New Traditional style properties averaging $357,000 with about $25 in monthly HOA fees.
