Located on the southernmost tip of Jamestown, the neighborhood of Beavertail does indeed resemble a beaver’s tail. But despite the remote location, residents are close to interesting amenities like beaches and state parks. This is a neighborhood for people who simply want to live off the beaten path.

Local Realtors like Devin Sheehan with Re/Max note that Beavertail definitely appeals to a certain lifestyle. “For one thing, it offers a lot of peace and quiet. A lot of the properties offer a tremendous amount of privacy.”

Indeed, you’ll find that homes are frequently placed back from the road. But this gives Beavertail an established feel, as it’s predominantly single-family homes and absent of rental properties. Despite the relatively secluded nature of the neighborhood, homes still reflect New England coastal customs, like wood shingle siding. These can nevertheless have a contemporary design, such as a streamlined boxiness that speaks to summer cottages of the past. Or there are even more fluid designs that evoke a provincial, country feel. Entry price points reflect the waterfront views and exclusive location, starting around $1-2 million.

There are two schools serving the Jamestown area, both of them highly regarded. Around 250 students attend Melrose Avenue School, an elementary covering grades K-4. There’s a close student-teacher ratio of 10 to 1. Niche awarded the school a B+ in the teachers category, and an A in the academics category, helping Melrose to receive an overall A-. In recent years the school has taken initiative to expand the playground and launch unique learning opportunities like a composting program. Lawn Avenue School covers grades 5-8, and has roughly 200 students attending. Receiving an A in both the academics and teachers category from Niche, the school is also praised for its tutoring and after school resources. Bus service for residents is provided so they can attend grades 9-12 at North Kingstown High, along with 1,500 other students. The school is highly regarded, receiving an A in the academics category and even an A overall from Niche.

Of course, one of the prime reasons to live here is backyard access to Jamestown’s natural splendor. Mackerel Cove Beach offers calm and shallow waters, making it a top choice for those in search of a safe swim. The area is also visually appealing: vegetation and wildflowers dot the dunes, and the lack of concession stands make the beach feel like a real gem. Fort Getty Park offers over 40 acres to camp on, plus you can busy yourself with the varied features: hiking trails, wildlife observation decks, old fortifications, a rocky beach and views of the Jamestown Bridge. Heading further south you’ll encounter the 22-acre Battery Park, which is equally rich in views and steeped in Revolutionary-era history. At land’s end is Beavertail State Park, complete with an iconic lighthouse. This is a tourist attraction known for its superlative views, but it’s also popular with fishers and those interested in observing wildlife.

Locals note that, in exchange for an abundance of natural and historic amenities, you’ll have to get in a car for shopping and dining destinations. Downtown Jamestown offers all manner of entertaining diversions, like the Wicked Whisk, where you can get sweet treats like maple walnut ice cream plus savory delights like a charcuterie board.

Overall, Beavertail is a place that helps you to find a peaceful retreat.
