About Janesville, WI

About Janesville, WI

The transformation of Janesville

For much of the 20th century, Janesville was home to prominent industrial employers. Thousands were out of work due to the closing of a GM plant in 2008 that was operational for 90 years. Over the past 15 years, the city has rebounded thanks to downtown revitalization by sprucing up old buildings and opening trendy businesses and restaurants. “The downtown area is less crowded than a typical big city, more comfortable, and has free parking. You don’t find that in a big city,” says Susan Melton, marketing director at the Janesville Area Convention and Visitors Bureau. The 2020 census shows the Janesville population as just over 65,000.

While Janesville's face has changed over the past decade and a half, one thing remains constant: its nickname of Wisconsin’s Great Outside. The city has nearly 2,600 acres of park space and many opportunities to hop on a walking or biking trail, strap on skis and shush along a path. The Rock River flows through downtown, inviting boating and other water activities. The other constant in Janesville is its abundant history that lives on in its 13 historic districts.

Plenty of parks in Janesville

With the number of parks in Janesville, there’s a good bet that the Ice Age National Scenic Trail goes through some of them. The trail passes through much of Wisconsin and meanders through Janesville. Its path throughout the state and the city traces the path of a glacier that covered the state tens of thousands of years ago. Points along the trail include Riverside Park, a public playground with boat launches on the Rock River. Other amenities at the 87-acre site include tennis and volleyball courts and a disc golf course. Traxler Park is downtown and features a stadium that hosts the Rock Aqua Water Ski Team, a 22-time national champion performing free shows on Wednesday and Sunday nights in the summer for over 60 years.
