Two rural farming communities near the Rio Grande

Set about 40 miles south of downtown Albuquerque, Jarales and Bosque offer quiet, wide-open farmland and of forest to the south. “Both are very rural and one’s right after the other,” says Alonzo Baldonado, former New Mexico State Representative and Real Estate Broker with RE/MAX Gallery. “So, they’re not really defined; there’s no line or sign, but they’re sister communities.” Many of the area’s 1,800 residents are farmers, and east- and west-coasters are moving here for the dry climate and seclusion, commuting into Albuquerque. Locals can shop and dine in nearby Belen, or ride horses in the Bosque, bordering the Rio Grande.

Sprawling ranch-style homes on large lots

“Homes here tend to be single-story, sprawling 2,500- to 4,500-square-foot. And there’s no set plan; you’ll see large custom homes randomly pop up, mixed with 1970s single-wides,” says Baldonado. Most are three-to four-bedroom ranch-style homes on up to 5-acre lots, with either sandy or dirt-packed driveways, ranging between $230,000 and $500,000; common features include brick or earth-toned exteriors, and some have concrete sidewalks leading to front doors. “There’s some homes from 1900 out here, and a lot of the owners are farmers,” says Shalamaree Luna-Hicks, Real Estate Agent with Keller Williams Realty, “so they have corrals and barns for their horses and other animals.” Toward the western end of Jarales, vacant lots of up to 10 acres start at $22,000.

Soccer, picnics and horseback riding in the forest

Residents can travel to Eagle Park 6 miles north for a pickup game of soccer, or picnic under mature trees at Anna Becker Park across town, while hikers and horseback riders head south to hit up miles of trails at the Bosque, which is Spanish for “wooded area.” Bordering the Rio Grande, the Bosque “has the one of the largest cottonwood forests in the world, and when you’re there, it’s just trees and river, and you feel like you’re in the middle of nowhere,” says Baldonado.

Thin-crust pizzas, chili cheeseburgers and wine

Three miles north in Belen, local favorite Casa de Pizza is “as famous as it gets in Jarales,” says Baldonado, whose friends always ask him to bring some Casa when he passes through; diners here can enjoy a thin-crust pepperoni and green chile pizza with a side salad. Further north, 1950s-style Penny’s Diner offers pancakes and chili cheeseburgers with milkshakes, and locals can stay in the area to sip dry and sweet wines at Jaramillo Vineyard’s tasting room in Belen's historic hotel. Shoppers browse retailers like Kohl’s 45 miles north, before grabbing groceries at Lowe’s Market closer to town.

Pig roasts and a fishing tournament

Sponsored by the Valencia County Hispano Chamber of Commerce, the annual Matanza takes place in Belen between December and March, where families roast pigs over deep, coal-filled pits, a tradition dating back to when the Spanish first introduced pigs to the Rio Grande Valley; ticket sales fund scholarships for local students. “Jarales is also starting its first-ever Rio Grande fishing tournament this year, and everyone from the entire county is invited,” says Hicks. “We’re hoping to turn it into an annual event.”
