The "Birthplace of First Aid" in America

When settlers first came to the Jermyn area in the early to mid-1800s, they found that the land was full of anthracite, a valuable type of coal, and began to develop mine shafts. Toward the end of the 19th century, Jermyn became known as the “Birthplace of First Aid” in America: “A lot of injured coal workers weren’t able to get immediate care, and their fellow miners weren’t trained on how to medically help them - that’s when Jermyn realized they needed to teach workers emergency care,” Striefsky says. In 1899, the Jermyn Coal Colliery attended America’s foremost first aid class instructed by Dr. Matthew Shields, which then sparked improved workplace safety standards and training across the country.
