Quiet atmosphere with room to breathe in Jerome
Like many other small towns in Somerset County, Jerome was busy in the early 1900s with miners moving in to find work. While the mines closed in the 1950s, some residents stayed with their families and made the area their permanent home. Today, this quiet neighborhood continues to be a place to live close to family. Tina Yates, owner of Tina’s Stitch and Fix, experienced this firsthand. “I’ve lived here for about a year,” Yates says. “I moved here from Baswell to live close to my sister. The neighbors are spread out, and it’s very quiet.” The Conemaugh Township School District serves the area and attracts new residents who want to live close to the schools. And while most people travel 15 miles to Johnstown for shopping and dining, there's a bar in town and more restaurants are about 4 miles away in Davidsville.

Basketball at Conemaugh Township Middle/High
Jean Magdelinic, a member of the Conemaugh Township Historical Society, says, “Jerome used to have its own elementary school, but now there’s the Conemaugh Township Area Elementary School. The schools are a big draw to the area.” Conemaugh Township Area Elementary School earns an A-minus from Niche and serves kindergarten through fifth grade. Conemaugh Township Middle/High School gets a C-plus and covers sixth through 12th grade. The school was named a National Blue Ribbon School in 2020 by the U.S. Department of Education, and its boys' basketball team has won the district championship four years in a row. The closest private school is Johnstown Christian School, which serves preschool through high school students 5 miles northeast of the neighborhood.

Jerome's 1900s bungalows start at $75,000
Jerome homes have similar bungalow-style designs, as most were built around 1900 for miners moving into the area. The common design includes a wide front porch, moderate yard space, a detached garage and at least two bedrooms. Some larger homes have been split into duplexes, and newer additions to the neighborhood are often ranch or manufactured homes. Prices here often range from $75,000 to $135,000. The residential streets make up a small section of the area, and the rest is filled with farmland and forests.

Hanging out at the Jerome Volunteer Fire Department
Yates says Jerome is more rural than Somerset, with fewer businesses and a quieter atmosphere. “There’s not much going on, but there’s bingo at the Jerome Volunteer Fire Department,” Yates says. Bingo nights happen every Tuesday at the fire department’s social hall. The department operates with volunteers and donations, so to raise funds, the group hosts Bring Back the Block parties where people bring dishes to share, see the fire trucks on display and dance to music. Tickets cost $10, and there’s usually a raffle with prizes. The CAP Index gives the neighborhood a crime score of 1 out of 10, which is lower than the national average of 4.

For some fun outside of the neighborhood, there’s the Quemahoning Family Recreation Area. An annual or day pass is required to use the boat ramp and set out on the Quemahoning Reservoir, also known as the Que by locals. The nearby Yak Shak is open from May to September, with rentable canoes, kayaks and paddle boards. The area also has a designated swimming area, playground equipment and tent campsites for longer visits.

Shopping and dining locally or in Johnstown
The Dollar General off Penn Avenue is the only store in town. Anyone who needs fresh produce or daily goods drives 9 miles down U.S. Route 219, also known as Flight 93 Memorial Highway, to shop at the Giant Eagle Supermarket or Walmart Supercenter in Johnstown. Knucklehead’s Saloon is the neighborhood bar where locals chat with the bartenders or play darts while waiting for their drinks. Davidsville, east of Jerome, features the Thomahawk Deli & Grill, which has been serving breakfast, lunch, dinner and a selection of smoked meat for over 13 years. “The Go Moore Store is the gossip center of the town,” Magdelinic says. The store also sells locally made products, including honey and maple syrup, that locals can pick up before settling in to hear juicy town news.

Shoyer Electric is in the middle of the neighborhood and surrounded by homes. Employees can walk to work in the morning, though they have to walk on the road or through grass since there are no sidewalks. Visiting Johnstown for shopping and dining spots requires a car, as no buses serve the area. Penn Avenue is the main road that guides drivers to U.S. Route 219. Johnstown has medical facilities, shopping, dining and the University of Pittsburgh at Johnstown. John Murtha Johnstown-Cambria County Airport is 13 miles away and offers service to Chicago O'Hare International Airport and Washington Dulles International Airport on United Airlines. Maple Spring Church was founded in 1875 and filled a small building until a new church was built in 1906. The church has been renovated and expanded since, but it never moved from its spot off Spring Road. The other nearby church is St. Peter & Paul Byzantine Catholic Church, and it’s slightly younger, as it was established in 1910.
