The Jessup borough, about 10 miles northeast of Scranton, fuses suburban and rural living into one package. Jessup is often recognized for its relatively affordable cost of living and its unique stores. “There are small shops and access to close-knit community restaurants, which just makes the town really homey,” says Fawn Contreras, head of e-services at the Valley Community Library. The anthracite coal fields originally attracted a population of miners during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. A large group of Italian settlers came to the area for these job opportunities, which can still be seen in the culture of the borough today. Italian restaurants known all over the surrounding areas keep locals coming back, and the Saint Ubaldo Day carnival and Running of the Saints keep the ancient Italian tradition alive in America. The borough has proximity to major highways, such as Route 6, and the Wilkes-Barre Scranton International Airport. The County of Lackawanna Transit System (COLTS) also provides public transportation options. Though the neighborhood mostly includes small shops, two Quinn’s Markets are both within 2 miles for groceries and other essentials. Jessup residents agree that community events and admired small businesses make Jessup a friendly, family-oriented town.
Little Italy, Jessup Style
Because of Jessup’s rich Italian history, the borough mostly consists of popular Italian restaurants. Mariano’s Cucina & Provisions is a specialty Italian market that sells imported goods and meats. The family-owned Jessup Pizzeria serves New York-style pies. Locals do their shopping at the small businesses in town, but two Quinn’s Market locations are in the neighboring areas of Archbald and Peckville, selling groceries and essentials. The Giant supermarket is about 3 miles away in Dickson City, and Target is about 5 miles west.

Running of the Saints in Italy's sister city
The most exciting day of the year in Jessup is the Saturday of Memorial Day weekend, where locals participate in the Running of the Saints for Saint Ubaldo Day. The colorful yellow, red and blue procession runs through the streets with statues that can weigh over 500 pounds to honor the late Bishop Ubaldo Baldassini. Only two cities in the world participate in this event: Gubbio, Italy and Jessup. In fact, Gubbio sent a statue of Saint Ubaldo to Jessup to acknowledge the bond between the two “sister cities.”

Homebuyers can find mostly traditional-style architecture in Jessup, but ranch-style and split-level homes are sprinkled into the mix as well. Most all homes sell in the $100,000 to $200,000 range with a few outliers in both directions. While there are some newer homes, most were built in the early to mid-1900s. Driveways are prevalent in residential neighborhoods, so street parking is uncommon. Almost every street is lined with a sidewalk, making the borough very walkable. The appearance of the area also remains important to residents: “We have community cleanups that always have a great turnout. They keep the areas looking nice,” Contreras says.

Valley View School District
Children can attend Valley View Elementary and Intermediate schools, which both earn a B-minus on Niche. Students can then head to Valley View Middle School, which scores a C. Valley View High School also has a B-minus grade and is known for bringing the community together for Friday night varsity football games. For a private elementary and middle school option, LaSalle Academy is a Catholic school in Jessup that brings in students from all over the Scranton area.

Park by the tracks, run in the grass
The Jessup Memorial Field Park and Kid’s Korner offer numerous activities for the entire family. The community space features Little League fields, a playground and green space. Residents have celebrations and fairs at the park, sled in the wintertime and watch fireworks in the summer. The park also features an old military tank and other veteran memorials. Station Park offers large gazebos surrounded by grass and picnic tables. It lies next to the historic D&H railroad, where the Steamtown train brings Mr. and Mrs. Claus to the annual “Christmas in a Small Town Santa Train” event.

Fly, Park N Ride
The County of Lackawanna Transit System buses service the borough, and residents have easy access to Route 6 and other major highways. The Park N Ride system allows locals to leave their privately owned vehicles in a lot about a quarter of a mile away from the highway and take public transportation to surrounding areas. The Wilkes-Barre Scranton International Airport also offers direct flights to major cities. There is no long commute for health care in Jessup, as Geisinger Community Medical Center and Wayne Memorial Hospital are both primary and emergency care establishments in the borough.
