Short trips to nearby parks and downtown Johnson City comprise this community
Keystone is a small, northeast suburb of Johnson City that spans just over a mile from tip to tip. The neighborhood's namesake park, Legion Street Pool and the Johnson City Doughboys' baseball stadium are located in the southwestern part of the community, while shopping is available along its northeastern eastern edge, placing entertainment and errands within walking distance or a short drive. Beyond the neighborhood, towards Johnson City, a mile and a half away, residents can enjoy festivals, dining and more shops.
Getting the day started with breakfast at Penny Man's Diner
Nearby shopping and dining is concentrated along East Main Street, home to Dollar Tree, Dollar General and H&H Market of JC, which stocks basic grocery needs. She’s Thrifty Shop and The Corner Thrift Shop are also there. Penny Man’s Diner serves breakfast, lunch and dinner and lives up to its name as most menu items are under 10 dollars. Outside the neighborhood, United Grocery Outlet, a mile northeast, has larger grocery selection, and Main Street Pizza Company and knick-knack shops dot East Main Street going west to downtown.
1900s ranch-style homes
Between the primarily industrial southeast portion of the neighborhood and the commercial northeast, gridded residential streets flanked by streetlights contain ranch-style homes on quarter-acre lots. Some houses were built as recently as 2008, but most date back to the mid-1900s. Prices range from $120,000 to $225,000. In addition to single-family housing, the Johnson City Housing Authority has affordable public housing projects in the community that provide rental options for veterans, unhoused persons and the elderly.
Making short trips to cheer on the Johnson City Doughboys
Entertainment and recreation are available throughout the neighborhood and walkable from many homes. Memorial Park Community Center on Bert Street provides programming and activities for all ages, from youth karate courses in its gymnasium to Tai Chi for Arthritis and Silver Sneakers Yoga classes at its Senior Center. Next door, the TVA Credit Union Ballpark is home to the Johnson City Doughboys. The entrance of the Tweetsie Trail is also located in the neighborhood. “It actually used to be a railroad track the city turned into a bike path,” says Kelly Hixson, a local Realtor and affiliate broker with Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices Greg Cox Real Estate. “It’s a very popular spot for biking, and it stretches from Johnson City to outer Elizabethton.”
Work-Based Learning at Science Hill High School
Mountain View Elementary School, which maintains a B-plus rating on Niche, enrolls students in prekindergarten through fourth grade. Fifth and sixth-grade students continue on to Indian Trail Middle School before feeding into Liberty Bell Middle School for seventh and eighth grade. Both schools hold an A rating, as does Science Hill High School, where students finish their education. The high school offers a Work-Based Learning program where students can earn credit working with local businesses and organizations.
The sounds of the Blue Plum Festival
From early May through mid-October, vendors line the Pavilion in Downtown Johnson City every Saturday morning for the annual Johnson City Farmers Market. In addition to fresh produce, visitors can purchase handmade goods and custom flower bouquets. When June rolls around, Founders Park fills up for the Blue Plum Festival. A staple since 1999, the three-day event includes concerts from local and regional musicians and the Plum Fun Zone for the little ones, which includes yard games and a Ferris wheel.
Communing along Interstate 26
Interstate 26 runs directly east of the neighborhood, linking commuters to northern Johnson City, as well as Kingsport, which sits 23 miles north. Tri-Cities Airport is 17 miles to the northwest and reachable via State Route 75. Closer to home is Johnson City Medical Center, 3 miles west off North State of Franklin Road, and East Tennessee State University’s campus, a 2-mile drive in the same direction. Meanwhile, Johnson City Transit System provides public transportation with three bus stops located in the neighborhood. Walking commutes aren't out of the question either. “Getting downtown is much more convenient for people living within walking distance,” says Linda Spencer, a representative of Visit Johnson City. “It’s always a race to get parking spots on the weekends since we only have a couple of lots.”
Supporting the community at Johnson City Housing Authority
Keystone's overall CAP Index crime score is 5 out of 10, compared to the national average of 4. It scores a 6 and 7 for violent crimes. Johnson City Housing Authority, located in the neighborhood, works in tandem with the area’s residents to minimize crime and improve overall safety. The organization offers several programs, including Police and Teens Reaching Opportunities for Life, which holds regular competitions amongst youth for academics, community service and other categories, and Community Involvement Workshops, where residents can get involved and share relevant concerns on a monthly basis.
