The choice of relaxing at home or exploring the opportunities of downtown next door
The community of Mountain Home offers quiet residential streets directly west of downtown Johnson City. Though separated from the city’s hubbub, those looking to explore its local shops and eateries can do it conveniently along a stroll or short drive. The area’s most established medical facilities also reside in the neighborhood, as well as a nationally recognized veterans cemetery that the neighborhood takes its name from. Close to downtown amenities and with stunning mountain views, Mountain Home also hosts the annual Blue Plum Festival, a popular event that locals look forward to each year. But folks here find time most days to relax peacefully on their front porch in their centrally located community.
The eats of White Duck Taco Shop and shops of West Main Street
Local restaurants of downtown Johnson City, like White Duck Taco Shop, sit directly east of the neighborhood. “It’s not your typical taco restaurant,” says Linda Spencer, who works at Visit Johnson City across the street. “They have different kinds of tacos like Korean and chicken masala, and it’s right next door to Yee-Haw Brewing Company.” Alongside several other eateries, a walk down East Main Street offers stops into gift shops like The Generalist and Artisan’s Village. For big-name retailers, The Mall at Johnson City sits 2 miles north off North Roan Street, while a Publix sits northwest on the other side of North State of Franklin Road for groceries.

Mountain views and early to mid-20th century homes
Apartments on the community's southern side, closer to East Tennessee State University, comprise roughly half of the neighborhood. The remaining residential landscape resides on the eastern portion of the neighborhood. A walk through the community reveals narrow sidewalks, a dotting of mature oak trees and sloping streets in the foothills north of Buffalo Mountain. Speed bumps throughout support the neighborhood’s quiet nature, slowing down cars as they pass older homes with wide front porches. Early to mid-20th century houses, alongside a handful built in the last five years, showcase ranch, Craftsman and American Foursquare styles. Potential homebuyers can expect a price range from $100,000 to $320,000, depending on size and condition.

Afternoon stops into Mountain Home National Cemetery and Old Kiwanis Park
Mountain Home National Cemetery sits along Memorial Avenue. The cemetery, spanning over 100 acres and home to over 14,000 veteran graves, has been a place to pay respects and reflect since 1903. Old Kiwanis Park sits directly northeast, where a padded playground offers a place for little ones to explore while a pair of basketball courts welcome afternoon pick-up games. Meanwhile, the ETSU Martin Center for the Arts on West State of Franklin Road is the place to go for live performances, from touring musicians to Broadway shows.

The sounds and drinks of Blue Plum Festival
Founders Park, on the community's eastern tip, hosts many events throughout the year, including the much-anticipated Blue Plum Festival. The two-day music event held each June brings the community together through performances from local musicians. The festival name honors the city’s history, back when it was a burgeoning 19th-century village with a post office dubbed Blue Plum. “It’s a family-friendly event during the day and livens up even more at night with drinks and such,” says Kelly Hixson, principal broker and owner of Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices Greg Cox Real Estate, who has over 14 years of experience selling in the city. “My friend group and I used to all go down, and it was always a fun time.” Similarly, the Johnson City Farmers Market is held at the park's pavilion, offering artisanal goods and produce from local vendors every Saturday morning from May through October.
Before-and after-school programming at South Side Elementary School

Short commutes to Johnson City and James H. Quillen VA Medical Center's
Johnson City Medical Center and James H. Quillen VA Medical Center, which serves the area’s veterans, reside within the community, making for short trips to the major employer. “The hospitals and us Realtors work in tandem,” Hixson says. “They bring the people, and we supply them with homes.” East Tennessee State University students can also get to class conveniently, as it is less than a mile south of the community. West State of Franklin Road connects commuters to Interstate 26, 2 miles east, which offers 18-mile trips north to Tri-Cities Airport with the help of State Route 75. Seven Johnson City Transit bus stops reside on Lamont and West Market streets, connecting riders to the greater Johnson City area.
Emergency sirens and passing trains
Considering the significant presence of medical facilities in the neighborhood, those living nearby are subject to the sirens of emergency vehicles heading in and out of the area. Similarly, trains regularly pass through the community's southern side during the day and night. As these trains cut through downtown, they sound off whistles, which are in earshot of nearby houses. Though considered background noise to many, some may want to consider this before moving into the community.
GreatSchools:
The GreatSchools Rating helps parents compare schools within a state based on a variety of school quality indicators and provides a helpful picture of how effectively each school serves all of its students. Ratings are on a scale of 1 (below average) to 10 (above average) and can include test scores, college readiness, academic progress, advanced courses, equity, discipline and attendance data. We also advise parents to visit schools, consider other information on school performance and programs, and consider family needs as part of the school selection process.
