A cozy, quaint peachy place

Johnston is known as the Peach Capital of the World, but that’s not all that’s sweet about this South Carolina town. In addition to producing 60 percent of the state’s peaches, this small community of 2,300 residents features a walkable, downtown main street teeming with mom-and-pop establishments and a slow-paced lifestyle. “Johnston is like Main Street USA in the 1950s. It feels like Mayberry,” says Melanie Stephan, a Realtor with Real Estate One, who has been selling homes in the area for 28 years. “The town is 10 blocks one way and 15 blocks the other way. As soon as you get out of town, it’s all farms. It’s a great place for people who don’t want the hustle and bustle of a big city. It’s just a cozy, quaint, peaceful place.”

Shops and Southern comfort food on Main Street

Along Johnston’s historic downtown main street, residents will find nationally known businesses and mom-and-pops, such as First Citizens Bank and Evergreen antiques on Calhoun Street. To pick up everyday essentials, discount stores Family Dollar and Dollar Tree are located on McQueen Street. “For grocery shopping people usually go to Edgefield because it’s closest,” Stephan says. “Edgefield is the next town over. It’s only like 10 minutes away.” For eating out, residents head to Fiesta Mexican Restaurant, on Calhoun Street, for traditional south-of-the-border fare, as well as monster margaritas and live music. Riley’s On Main, also on Calhoun Street, is the go-to spot for Southern comfort foods such as country fried steak, mashed potatoes and banana pudding. Locals know to come hungry because food here is served buffet style.

Annual celebration for all things peaches

Locals look forward to festive annual events, such as the Christmas Celebration and the Johnston Peach Blossom Festival. The Christmas Celebration, held the first Monday after Thanksgiving on Mims Avenue, features an appearance by Santa, Christmas carols, food vendors and the lighting of the town’s Christmas tree. In May, the town celebrates all things peaches with live music, a parade, car show and peach-themed treats on Calhoun Street.

Victorian farmhouses and ranch-styles among fruit trees

Those looking to move to Johnston will primarily find homes built from the early 1900s to the modern day. They come in a myriad of styles, including Victorian farmhouses, ranch-style homes and clapboard bungalows. Properties typically rest along quiet, sidewalk-free streets with spacious lots adorned with mature pine and fruit trees. “You’ll see a lot of peach, pecan and fig trees in the area,” Stephan says. A cozy three-bedroom on a quarter-acre could be found for $150,000, while a more spacious four-bedroom with four acres runs around $250,000. “On average, things are selling within 30 to 45 days now,” Stephan says. “It’s like everywhere, things have slowed down a little because of the interest rates.”

GreatSchools: The GreatSchools Rating helps parents compare schools within a state based on a variety of school quality indicators and provides a helpful picture of how effectively each school serves all of its students. We also advise parents to visit schools, consider other information on school performance and programs, and consider family needs as part of the school selection process.
