Located along the banks of the Des Plaines River, Mount Zion is a residential neighborhood of single-story homes near Downtown Joliet that are conveniently priced thanks to the Joliet 9 Generating Station sitting at the edge of Brandon Bridge. “It’s a small and quiet residential area,” says Douglas Geissler, a Real Estate Agent with Century 21 Circle who has over 20 years of experience selling in Joliet. Homeowners can enjoy a lower cost of living while still having access to an abundant amount of amenities from the cities nearby.

Less expensive than surrounding areas
Most properties in the Mount Zion neighborhood were built around the 1960s. “The homes are smaller, but the neighborhood is viewed to be very affordable,” Giessler says. Small ranch-style homes line neighborhood streets for around $165,000 to $180,000. These homes are anywhere from 900 square feet to 1250 square feet and are very simplistic in design.

A walking trail along the river
While Mount Zion itself doesn’t have many opportunities for outdoor recreation, residents don’t have to travel far to find some. Nowell Park is less than two miles away in Preston Heights and has a baseball field, basketball court and playground area for little ones to enjoy. Those who like to go biking or hiking can travel across the Des Plaines River on the Brandon Bridge to get to the I&M Canal Trail. The dirt path follows the river and provides beautiful natural views.

When shopping for essentials, people travel four miles away to the large commercial retail space across the river at the intersection of Interstate 52 and Highway 7. In addition to the Sam’s Club and car dealerships, there are also plenty of fast-food chains like Culvers and Steak N Shake.
