Mount Zion
Neighborhood in Joliet, Illinois
Will County 60436
Less expensive than surrounding areas
Most properties in the Mount Zion neighborhood were built around the 1960s. “The homes are smaller, but the neighborhood is viewed to be very affordable,” Giessler says. Small ranch-style homes line neighborhood streets for around $165,000 to $180,000. These homes are anywhere from 900 square feet to 1250 square feet and are very simplistic in design.A walking trail along the river
While Mount Zion itself doesn’t have many opportunities for outdoor recreation, residents don’t have to travel far to find some. Nowell Park is less than two miles away in Preston Heights and has a baseball field, basketball court and playground area for little ones to enjoy. Those who like to go biking or hiking can travel across the Des Plaines River on the Brandon Bridge to get to the I&M Canal Trail. The dirt path follows the river and provides beautiful natural views.Impressive student-teacher ratios
Families living in the area have a few options on where to send their children to school. Laraway Elementary School has a D-plus grade on Niche but instructs kindergarten through eighth grade at a 10-1 student-teacher ratio. Another option is Joliet Public School District No. 86, where students can attend Edna Keith Elementary School and Dirksen Jr High School. Both have a C-minus Niche grade and maintain average test scores. From there, students can go to Joliet West High School. Rated No. 11 in Best Public High Schools in Will County, Joliet West has a B-plus Niche grade and career academies that give its students opportunities to take courses based on their career interests.NASCAR races
Roughly six miles south of Mount Zion is the Chicagoland Speedway. Residents can spend their weekends during the NASCAR season watching car races and cheering on their favorite drivers. The venue will also hold live music concerts during the summer.
Cars, trains and busses
Despite living right next to train tracks, most residents in Mount Zion use their own vehicles to travel around. US Interstate 80, Interstate 52 and Route 53 are close by for commuters to hop on and get where they need to go. When there’s an emergency, the Ascension Saint Joseph - Joliet hospital is only six miles away across the river. For those who do plan on traveling far, the Joliet Metra Train Station is only 2.6 miles away and connects to the Rock Island (RI) line and Heritage Corridor (HC) line. There are also bus stops all along South Chicago Street for those who rely on public transportation.Within 5 miles of every necessity
Shopping and entertainment are only a quick drive away for Mount Zion residents. “You’re about 10 minutes from Downtown Joliet and all its amenities,” Geissler says. Downtown is only 2.7 miles north and has numerous retail and dining options. Residents can gamble at Harrah’s Casino and grab a bite to eat at the Cross Street Grill inside. When shopping for essentials, people travel four miles away to the large commercial retail space across the river at the intersection of Interstate 52 and Highway 7. In addition to the Sam’s Club and car dealerships, there are also plenty of fast-food chains like Culvers and Steak N Shake. Groceries are available at the Jewel-Osco, or west on Jefferson Street at Tony’s Fresh Market. For dinner closer to home, Doggy Dogs is a restaurant on South Chicago Street that serves loaded hot dog and sausage platters.
