Bringing history to the forefront
The community of Northeast Joliet sits alongside the Des Plaines River, where Joliet Steel and Iron Works used to be housed. The footprint of the old neighboring railroad system, Elgin, Joliet and Eastern Railway Company (EJ&E), is a reminder of the industry that built up Northeast Joliet’s economy in the late 1880s. Today, Northeast Joliet integrates the culture of the many Slovenian workers who came to the community, during this time of industrialization, with the Slovenian Heritage Museum.
In response to another mass migration to the Chicago suburbs, in 1969, the Spanish Community Center was founded to provide resources. The Center continues to give back to the community today by offering bilingual childcare, social services, and legal and immigration services. The Joliet Area Historical Museum provides a larger overview of the area’s history. Some of these stories are shared by local artists who paint murals on the old brick facades that line the community’s gridded streets.

Gardens and garages
Colonial Revival, ranch-style and Bungalow are the most prominent house styles within the community. These homes may date back to the 1880s when the railroad industry boom increased demand for workers' housing; the most recently built homes date to the early 2000s. “Economically, the value of the properties is a lower price,” says Broker Ernestina Preciado with RE/MAX 10, a top-producing listing agent. “Joliet has very low taxes compared to surrounding cities, so therefore mortgage payments are lower too.” The median single-family price is $150,000, around $100,000 less than the average for Joliet. Sidewalks line the front of these homes, ensuring safe passage for residents while they walk their dogs through town. Homes have detached garages or driveways in the front with room in the backyard to plant personal gardens.
