Holding on to history

Southeast Joliet is home to the East Side National Register Historic District. This section of the larger city, Joliet, earns this recognition because of the historic homes found within the area, including the Jacob Henry Mansion. Some of these properties feature Joliet limestone, reminiscent of the town’s origins within the quarry industry. Today, residents continue to enjoy the benefits of living near the Des Plaines River and a bustling downtown. “Downtown is being revitalized. They have new restaurants popping up and many biking paths people can go on,” says Broker Susie Scheuber, with RE/MAX Ultimate Professionals, and longtime resident of the Will County area. Traveling to these hot spots is convenient because Interstate 80 and Routes 30 and 52 run throughout the community.

From classic to contemporary

The median home year is 1954, but many of the homes in Southeast Joliet can date as far back as the 1880s. Common home styles that grace Southeast Joliet’s tree-lined sidewalks are Colonial Revival, Bungalow and Craftsman. In the Historic District, some of these homes may also feature Georgian, Gothic Revival and Queen Anne styles. Each single-family home features a paved driveway and backyards big enough for a personal garden and shed; these properties hold a median list price of $165,000. This price is much cheaper than on the other side of the river. “For Joliet proper, you pay somewhere around the $260,000 to $270,000 mark; there are some that are in the $300,000s; it depends. The location is a major factor,” Scheuber says.

A walk in the park

Along Hickory Creek, bikers, walkers and cross-country skiers find their sanctuary. There are over 35 miles of combined trails for them to travel, including part of the Old Plank Road Trail, which is a 22-mile-long paved path managed by Will County and neighboring communities. Locals can also book picnic shelters within the Hickory Creek Forest Preserve for special occasions like family reunions. At Crombie Park, kids can race one another down the slides or practice their soccer ball passes in the flat field behind the playground. Across the river at Billie Limacher Bicentennial Park, boulders inscribed with the town’s history, line the walking and bike paths.
