Southview Acres
Neighborhood in Jonesboro, Arkansas
Craighead County 72404
Well-priced housing in a walkable neighborhood
There is a single entrance and exit into the neighborhood, so it resembles a gated community without the gate. Homes sit on oversized lots that feature spacious, lush lawns. There are no sidewalks, but the mature oaks and other trees in the neighborhood provide a nice setting for residents to enjoy. “It’s a great walking neighborhood,” Barlow says. Most of the three- and four-bedroom homes are single-story, ranch-style designs, although Colonial-style dormers peek out from some of the multi-level options. Large driveways and attached garages are standard. Prices typically range from the low $200,000s to the high $200,000s. “Good entry-level homes,” Barlow says. “For that price point in that school district, this is the place.” Much of the surrounding area is county property, but not this neighborhood. “The odd part about Southview is that it’s the only thing south of Lawson Road that’s part of the city,” Barlow says. “You’ve got city water, city electric, and even the trash pickup is done by the city.”Valley View School District gets high marks from Niche
Students are served by the Valley View School District, which is rated B-plus by Niche. Its four schools share a single campus a little over a mile away. Valley View Elementary School is the highest rated of the four, earning an A from Niche. Valley View Intermediate School, which serves students in third through sixth grades, and Valley View Junior High School, which serves students in seventh through ninth grades, are rated A-minus. Valley View High is a B-rated school that offers a variety of Advanced Placement courses. Rising seniors have the opportunity to apply for Arkansas Governor’s School, a prestigious summer program in which high-performing students spend four weeks on a college campus.Craighead Forest Park, RidgePointe Country Club offer a variety of activities.
Even closer than the schools is Craighead Forest Park. Located on Crowley’s Ridge, it is anchored by a lake and includes an array of recreational options spread across almost 700 acres. Anglers can fish from docks and jetties, or they can launch a boat during the day. The 60-acre lake also offers room for kayaks and paddleboats. Visitors also have access to ballfields, basketball and volleyball courts, a disc golf course and a playground. As Barlow points out, it’s just nice to hang out and enjoy the surroundings. “There are about 3 miles of trails,” he says. “It’s a good place for walking dogs.” Another nearby option is Miracle League Park. The Miracle League allows children and adults with mental and physical limitations to play on the world’s largest rubberized ballfield, designed to accommodate wheelchairs and other devices needed for mobility. RidgePointe Country Club is a southwest Jonesboro attraction that features an 18-hole golf course and offers additional resort-style amenities. The semi-private club offers several different memberships for golfers and non-golfers alike.Lebowski's microbrewery will soon be coming to the area
Dining and entertainment options have traditionally been lacking in the Valley View area, but that is about to change. Lebowski’s, a movie-themed microbrewery and restaurant, will be one of the anchor establishments of the Southern Hills mixed-used development. The commercial center is being built on Southwest Drive, Valley View’s primary roadway, about 2 miles from the neighborhood. La Cascada Mexican Restaurant on Southwest Drive is a highly-rated eatery nearby. A concentration of retail and dining options can be found on and around several commercial corridors north of the neighborhood. Residents can shop for groceries at Aldi and stock up on essentials at Walmart and Sam’s Club. Lost Pizza Co., a popular chain, and Pella Café, which serves up Greek and Mediterranean favorites, are among the many dining stops closer to the center of town. Omar’s Uptown is a high-end steakhouse in downtown Jonesboro about 7 miles away.I-555, Highway 49 provide access to Greater Jonesboro
Nearby Interstate 555 provides access to the heart of downtown in 15 minutes. The buzzy shopping and dining district also hosts several of the city’s premier events. They include BBQ Fest, Fall Fest, Arts & Eat Fest and the annual Christmas parade. St. Bernards Medical Center is located downtown. U.S. Highway 49 is also close to the neighborhood and allows for travel north into Greater Jonesboro. Residents can go east or west to get to I-55, which eventually becomes I-55 and leads to Memphis about 70 miles, or an hour’s drive, away. Memphis International Airport is the closest airport offering full-service commercial flights.
