Growing Joplin neighborhood with elementary education at the center
Jefferson mirrors greater Joplin, balancing older architecture with steady growth. Like many of Joplin neighborhoods, Jefferson homes date back to the city's early days, while open plots and ongoing construction show signs of development. Though it's less than 2 miles west of downtown, this relaxed, residential area is removed from city noise, with family-friendly features at the center. Jefferson bears the same name as its centrally located elementary school. It's also within walking distance of North Middle School and the 160-acre Schifferdecker Park, institutions that have stood for decades amid the ongoing change. Route 66, also known as Seventh Street, is a commercial area forming Jefferson's southern border that continues to draw new shops and restaurants nearby.
Jefferson is a neighborhood located in western Joplin.

Early 20th-century homes and new construction
Single-family homes surround Jefferson Elementary School, situated at the center of the neighborhood. Minimal Traditional, ranch and shotgun homes date from 1900 through today. Some have been fully renovated with stainless steel kitchen appliances and granite countertops, while others still need work. Brand new homes are also on the market. These vary in style but are generally around 1,400 square feet, with open concept living spaces and high-end kitchen appliances. They also tend to have attached two-car garages and driveways. Lot sizes vary from house to house, but some front yards are large enough to fit a swing set or a trampoline. Small, fixer-upper homes can sell for around $60,000, but move-in-ready homes generally range from $120,000 to $220,000. Although there are no sidewalks here, kids are able to walk to and from school in this low-traffic neighborhood.
It is common for Jefferson homes to have trees in the front yards.

Security upgrades at Jefferson Elementary School
Jefferson Elementary School, earning a B-minus from Niche, has been a neighborhood landmark since 1958. However, it's received upgrades in recent years, such as a tornado safe room and a security system at the front entrance. Students can hear from community members about different jobs during Lunch and Learn Career Exploration Day. North Middle School, which earns a B-minus, is also within walking distance just east. With several sports fields on campus, the school offers athletics, music, art, drama and other extracurriculars. School buses connect to the C-plus-rated Joplin High School, about 4 miles southeast. Teens there have an opportunity to earn an associate degree along with their high school diploma through Dual Credit classes on the Joplin High campus, online or at local colleges.
Waterpark fun at Schifferdecker Park
Schifferdecker Park has a wide variety of spaces for play, just 1 mile west. Spanning 160 acres, the park is home to the Joplin Athletic Complex, which hosts adult and youth volleyball, softball, baseball and soccer programs. The Schifferdecker Golf Course is a public 18-hole course that hosts tournaments throughout the year. The aquatic center is a popular summertime destination, resembling a miniature water park with a lazy river, rock wall, slides and concession area. For a casual visit, locals also enjoy Schifferdecker's playgrounds, basketball and volleyball courts and skate ramp. Bowling is another possible activity here. Fourth Street Bowl opened on the neighborhood's east side in 1946. It brings in a crowd with special deals including free bowling for kids in the summer. "Some people do that every day in the summer," says Fourth Street assistant manager Kiefer Fortuck. "That's what really makes people happy."
Coffee on the go at Cup O' Joe
Seventh Street has convenient shopping and dining options just south, which continue to grow. Walmart Supercenter is a popular spot to grab groceries and household essentials. Starbucks, Domino's Pizza, and a handful of local restaurants have set up shop here in recent years. Joplin's thousands of daily visitors help support this growth. "Joplin is so close to Kansas that a lot of people come through here to visit and go to work," says Clarissa Bowen, Realtor with Pro 100 Realtors and Joplin native. Cup O' Joe opened nearby in early 2023. Owner Dustin Drilling converted this space from a drive-through liquor store to a coffee spot, serving hot and cold espresso drinks on the go. Woody's Wood-Fire Pizza serves a variety of thin-crust pies and specialty offerings such as stuffed mushroom caps.
Sounds of Summer Concert Series brings music to the great outdoors
Schifferdecker Park is also the backdrop for nearby events. In March, it hosts a flashlight Easter egg hunt, where kids can hunt for treats under the stars at the Gene Bassman Softball Complex. In 2024, the park started a new tradition with the Sounds of Summer Concert Series, hosted by Connect2Culture, a local performing arts presenter. On the first three Thursdays in June, the Heartland Concert Band performs Broadway show tunes, marches and other genres.
Active Transportation Plan proposes future bike lanes
Jefferson is conveniently situated on the city's main east-west route. Seventh Street leads to downtown Joplin, about 2 miles east. With the closure of its trolley service, Joplin doesn't currently offer public transportation, but the Metro Area Public Transit Service provides door-to-door rides by appointment. Bike lanes are also unavailable here, but Joplin's 2022 Active Transportation Plan proposed future bicycle connectivity in this neighborhood. Joplin Regional Airport is 7 miles north, operating nonstop flights to Chicago and Denver. Access Family Care offers primary medical, general dental and urgent care on Jefferson's south side. Urgent care services are available from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Mondays and Wednesdays.
Community safety room offers shelter from tornadoes
Jefferson earns a CAP Index crime score of five out of 10, compared with four for the national average score. It earns higher scores for larceny and burglary. Some residents opt for personal security measures such as cameras. Tornados are a possibility in Joplin, and in 2011, the city experienced an EF5 event, which is still Missouri's deadliest tornado to date. Many Joplin residents have since installed storm bunkers. Most of Jefferson falls within Jefferson Elementary School's tornado protection zone, allowing residents to take shelter in the school's community safe room.
