Neighbors know their neighbors in friendly northeast Joplin
Larger lots and friendly neighbors give Joplin's Oak Grove neighborhood a rural vibe within the city. Tucked away in Joplin's northeast corner, Oak Grove is just 2 miles from city center. It's also situated in the coveted Rangeline Road area, which is also home to most of the city's shops and restaurants. Despite this, the Oak Grove remains a relaxed neighborhood with little traffic. Front-porch living fosters friendly conversations and relationships, creating a community where residents know their neighbors by name. "It's the kind of place where everyone gets outside," says Regina Lehmann, a Realtor at Show-Me Real Estate who sells in Joplin and the surrounding areas. "People will sit in their front yard and wave 'hi,' and the other neighbors walking by will say 'hi' and talk."
Larger lots and front porch living in Oak Grove
Single-family homes here are situated south of the neighborhood's industrial area to the north. In the center prospective buyers will find manicured lawns and cul-de-sacs featuring New Traditional homes built in the '80s and '90s, with driveways and two-car garages. "It was a period where homes were built solid — they're all well-built and well-kept," Lehmann says. Situated in Oak Grove's south side are bungalows, minimal Traditionals and ranch-style properties dating back to the early-to-mid 20th century. Sweeping, covered front porches are common for these older styles and are ideally suited for a pair of lounge chairs. Quarter- to full-acre lots expand outward, creating a sense of additional outdoor space. Houses here often sit back from the street, leaving room for a picnic table or a bench on grassy front yards. Prices range from $110,000 to $220,000 and traffic on Rangeline may create some noise.
Shopping and dining at Northpark Mall
Rangeline Road, Joplin's busiest commercial area, borders Oak Grove's east side. Just across the road, Northpark Mall is Joplin's main indoor shopping center and has been since 1972, despite storefronts and shoppers dwindling in recent years. Northpark features over 80 businesses to peruse, ranging from JCPenney to Dunham's Sports to T.J. Maxx. "It used to be very popular many years ago. I know it has some vacancies, but all malls have had vacancies since COVID," Lehmann says. The food court has casual dining options, as well as sit-down restaurants like Wasab Steak House & Sushi, which provides an immersive dining experience with hibachi meals cooked tableside. Just south of the mall, Target Grocery and Natural Grocers are two places residents may restock their essentials.
Undergratuate and graduate programs at MSSU
Oak Grove falls within one Joplin School District pipeline. Students typically progress from McKinley Elementary to East Middle to Joplin High School, all of which earn C-plus grades from Niche. Seventh and eighth graders at East Middle can stay active with extracurriculars like archery, cheer, football, basketball and cross country. While the Franklin Technology Center, located on the high school campus, offers some of the most robust career and technical education courses in all of southwest Missouri. The postsecondary opportunities continue at Missouri Southern State University, about a mile northeast; a state school that oversees nearly 4,300 students and 140 programs ranging from associate degrees to master's degrees.
Picnics and tennis at Leonard Park
Leonard Park is the closest spot to get some fresh air. Just south of the neighborhood, it's an 11-acre space where playgrounds, picnic areas and tennis courts are situated under a lush tree canopy. There are also several picnic tables and a larger pavilion that seats 150 people. Another nearby park, Ewert Park, is undergoing renovations which will include a new aquatic center and an ice-skating pathway that winds in and around it.
Fun and games at Tilt Studio
When the weather is cold, Northpark Mall also has indoor entertainment year-round. Tilt Studio has arcade games, black light mini golf, bumper cars and other interactive experiences. Just outside the main mall, Regal Northstar is the city's only movie theater, with several screens showcasing new releases. The mall also hosts an annual spring carnival complete with classic fair games, rides and food. Downtown Joplin is another event hub throughout the year. Each month, the city center hosts Third Thursday, which brings up to 150 vendors and several live music stages.
Seventh and Rangeline are major Joplin routes
Situated near the intersection of Seventh Street and Rangeline, Oak Grove is poised for easy commutes throughout Joplin. Seventh Street leads to downtown Joplin, 2 miles west. Freeman Hospital West, Joplin's biggest medical center is 5 miles southwest and provides emergency services. For out-of-town travel, Joplin Regional Airport is about 7 miles northwest and from there, travelers can take direct flights to Chicago and Denver, or stopover flights to other destinations across the U.S. Driving may be preferable to get around in Joplin, as the city doesn't have its own public transportation system nor bike lanes. However, Joplin's 2022 Active Transportation Plan aims to improve pedestrian accessibility in the coming years.
