Wilson-Hutton
Compact, mature homes along city blocks
More than half of the homes were built before 1926, with small bungalows and one-story American Foursquare houses packed together along the streets. Homes usually lack driveways, so people park their cars along the curb. While single-family homes are plentiful, many have been converted into rentals. Meanwhile, some houses in the neighborhood need significant renovations before they’re livable. Houses in the neighborhood rarely change hands. In the past year, only two homes have sold, with a fixer-upper selling for $35,000 and a turnkey two-bedroom house fetching $175,000.North Middle in the neighborhood, other Joplin schools nearby
Children in Wilson-Hutton can attend Dover Hill Elementary, which opened in 2023 to replace two 100-year-old elementary schools. The new school is not yet rated by Niche. However, Niche gives North Middle a B-minus and Joplin High a C-plus. Joplin High is part of the state’s A+ School program, which means students who graduate with high enough GPAs and test scores can receive scholarships for four-year colleges across Missouri.Chains, groceries and seafood on 7th Street
Dollar Tree and fast-food chains like Starbucks surround a commercial intersection south of the neighborhood at South Maiden Lane and West 7th Street. People heading east down West 7th Street pass G&W Foods supermarket and Crabby’s, an upscale seafood restaurant and bar. Eventually, 7th Street runs into downtown Joplin, where restaurants and art galleries line Main Street. Large retailers, such as Target and Kohl’s, surround Northpark Mall, about 4 miles from Wilson-Hutton.Nearby recreation includes playgrounds, pickleball and bowling
Residents have to head about a mile northeast of the neighborhood to access nearby parks. Roanoke Park runs along a gulley between homes, with a playground on one end and a tennis court on the other. A few blocks east, Landreth Park sits on the site of an 1800s mining camp. Today, visitors will see pickleball courts rather than pickaxes and people playing volleyball in sand pits rather than digging in lead pits. Events from disc golf tournaments to the Silver Sage Renaissance Festival gather at the park. Directly south of Wilson-Hutton, locals have been knocking down pins at 4th Street Bowl since it opened in 1946. The bowling alley hosts various leagues, with at least one meeting every day of the week.Tornado risk in Joplin
FEMA rates the risk of tornadoes in the county as “relatively high.” A tornado that hit Joplin in 2011 killed 161 people and destroyed more than 8,000 homes, making it one of the deadliest and most destructive tornadoes in U.S. history. Since then, the community has rebuilt homes, a hospital and Joplin High School.Interstate, airport and trolley service in Joplin
Most people use cars to get around Joplin, where the streets are laid out in a grid system. The Sunshine Lamp Trolley takes riders downtown, but the closest stops are south of the neighborhood on 4th Street. South of the city, Interstate 44 leads 70 miles east to Springfield and extends about 155 miles southwest to Tulsa. SkyWest Airlines offers nonstop flights to Denver and Chicago from Joplin Regional Airport.
