Renters and long-term residents in quiet east-central Joplin
YMCA is a community of renters and long-term residents loyal to their quiet corner of east-central Joplin. This established neighborhood was developed alongside nearby areas such as East Town and McKinley in the early 20th century. Today, residents continue maintaining older homes close to several city amenities. "Being that a lot of people are older, we just don't have too much craziness," says Marilynn Houpt, a resident of YMCA for 8 years and Joplin for 20. "It's nice and quiet and a pretty decent neighborhood. The lady caddy-corner from me has lived here for 60 years."
Updated bungalow, Minimal Traditionals and shotgun-style homes
In this all-residential area, single-family homes are arranged along grid-pattern streets. The houses reflect early 20th-century styles, including shotgun, Minimal Traditional and bungalow, which sometimes have front porches. Many have been remodeled, with updated kitchens and refinished hardwood floors, while others have renovation potential. Properties are rarely up for sale, but prices range from around $135,000 to $190,000 depending on age and condition. Mature trees add to the established vibe and plenty of shade over lawns and streets.
Early college experiences at Joplin High School
Younger residents typically attend McKinley Elementary School, East Middle School and Joplin High School, eaching a C-plus grade from Niche. McKinley and two other Joplin elementary schools are poised for a $9.5 million update project, including additional classrooms and renovations to cafeterias and art and music rooms. Joplin High School is the city's dedicated ninth-through-twelfth school, offering 64 early-college experiences, including dual credit, advanced placement and honors courses.
Joplin's largest splash park coming to Ewert Park
Green spaces are within about a mile east and west of the neighborhood. Leonard Park is a tree-covered area with paved walking paths, tennis courts and a playground under the shade. The picnic pavilion is popular for parties, accommodating about 150 people. Ewert Park is undergoing renovations that will add the area's largest splash park, multi-use courts and interpretive signage detailing the park's 100-year history.
Creative barbecue specials at Blackstone Gastropub
YMCA sits between the city's shopping and dining centers: downtown Joplin and Rangeline Road. Downtown is the spot for locally owned boutiques, bars and restaurants. Hackett Hot Wings is known for its 17 signature sauce flavors and sports bar setting with games on the big screen. Since opening in 2020, Blackstone Gastropub has become a local favorite for its creative take on barbecue, with weekly specials such as hot honey and barbecue mac and cheese topped with fried chicken. In the other direction, Rangeline Road is Joplin's retail center with a Walmart Supercenter, a Target and other national chains.
Thousands flock to Third Thursday
Joplin is a regional hub for Main Street events. Some events happen regularly, such as Third Thursday, a monthly street fest with around 100 vendors, live music, and different themes, such as Downtown Waterfest in July and Harvest Festival in October. Thousands of residents and visitors participate each month. "Everybody loves it — they're excited to get together and shop at all the vendors," Houpt says. "It's pretty popular."
Sunshine Lamp Trolley leads to shopping centers
Tucked away from busy roads, YMCA is a walkable area, although not every street has sidewalks. "For the most part, it's not busy, although there is some traffic around the time people get off work," Houpt says. Commuters can take Fourth Street or the Sunshine Lamp Trolley blue route to downtown and the Rangeline Road shopping district. Joplin Regional Airport is about 7 miles north, and Freeman Hospital West is about 5 miles south, offering emergency services.
Tornado shelter at McKinley Elementary
Tornadoes are a possibility in Joplin, with most extreme weather events happening between April and June. Community safe rooms at Joplin elementary schools are open to staff, students and residents living within a five-minute walk to campus. Some YMCA residents on the neighborhood's south side are within the boundary zone for McKinley Elementary's community safe room.
GreatSchools:
The GreatSchools Rating helps parents compare schools within a state based on a variety of school quality indicators and provides a helpful picture of how effectively each school serves all of its students. Ratings are on a scale of 1 (below average) to 10 (above average) and can include test scores, college readiness, academic progress, advanced courses, equity, discipline and attendance data. We also advise parents to visit schools, consider other information on school performance and programs, and consider family needs as part of the school selection process.
