New homes and lower prices in Jourdanton, the Atascosa County seat
Built in 1913, the Mission Revival-style Atascosa County Courthouse sits at the center of the county seat, Jourdanton. The county government is one of the community’s largest employers, as is the agricultural industry. But today, Jourdanton is growing, with fresh subdivisions offering new homes for buyers. Jourdanton draws residents with its lower prices compared to nearby towns like Pleasanton , commuting routes to San Antonio and a well-regarded school district.
Established ranch-style homes and new builds in subdivisions
Most of Jourdanton’s homes sit along the town’s gridded blocks, which cut through the hardy Texas trees and brush. Ranch-style homes are typical, with cars parked in driveways or under carports. These can sell from $100,000 to $210,000. However, new construction is also popping up, featuring a range of single-story and bi-level New Traditional homes built in the 2020s. “We had a local guy that started a neighborhood here,” says Michael Vickers, a Realtor with Dowdy Real Estate, who is originally from the area. “Lennar has come in and created another subdivision,” Vickers notes, referencing the homebuilding company, Lennar. The newer builds can sell for $160,000 to $280,000. Jourdanton’s median sale price is roughly $10,000 lower than in the larger adjacent town of Pleasanton. The overall CAP Index Crime Score for Jourdanton is 2 out of 10, compared to the national figure of 4.
Highly rated Jourdanton Independent School District
The Jourdanton Independent School District serves the community and receives a B-plus overall grade from Niche. Students can start at the Jourdanton Early Childhood Center for kindergarten and first grade. Jourdanton Elementary receives a B rating for grades two through five. Jourdanton Junior High gets an A-minus grade, while Jourdanton High receives a B-plus. Students at Jourdanton High have access to Career and Technical Education programs in subjects including architecture, marketing and agriculture.
Sports at Jourdanton City Park and the Jourdanton Sports Complex
Located in the center of town, Jourdanton City Park is a hub for recreation. The park features basketball and volleyball courts, playground equipment and a walking trail. The picnic pavilion in the park is available for rental for community events. Youth sports teams often play at the Jourdanton Sports Complex, which features several baseball and softball fields. The community’s pool is also located at the complex and is open during the summer.
Locally owned restaurants and more shopping options in Pleasanton
Restaurants and shops are mainly located along Oak Street, including Ace Hardware. Restaurante Chile Bandera is a local favorite for Mexican cuisine, including homemade tortillas. Sunshine House Coffee is across the street for hot beverages and pastries. “Mom-and-pop restaurants are probably your biggest businesses around,” Vickers says. Nearby Pleasanton has plenty more shopping and dining options, including an H-E-B roughly 4 miles away.
Community events put on by the chamber of commerce
The Jourdanton Chamber of Commerce sponsors plenty of community events throughout the year. These include holiday celebrations like an Independence Day festival, which features fireworks, a DJ and local vendors.
Commutes to San Antonio or nearby employers, such as oil fields
Texas Highway 16 runs through Jourdanton, leading 38 miles north to San Antonio. Residents can commute to the city for work. “Some go to San Antonio,” Vickers says. “Others go to the oil fields around here. And then there’s a power plant and a coal mine south of here.” The city is also home to San Antonio International Airport, which offers the closest commercial flights, 48 miles from Jourdanton. While most residents drive, Alamo Regional Transit provides on-demand transportation for the community and surrounding areas. Methodist Hospital Atascosa is on Jourdanton’s eastern side and has the closest emergency room, among other departments.
