A quiet get-away at the center of it all
Arcadia offers a healthy mix of suburban living and urban amenities. Situated just west of Western Michigan University, east of Highway 131, south of Main Street and North of Stadium Drive, it’s a quiet escape just blocks from essentials.
“It’s a really pleasant neighborhood,” says Rex Brueggemann, president of the Arcadia neighborhood association. “If you walked through, you’d see kids playing at the elementary school after hours. There are lots of people out walking dogs, doing yard work. Lots of cats lying in driveways.”
And along with physical allure and a serene nature, Arcadia offers friendly neighbors from a variety of backgrounds. “It’s a friendly place, but if people want to stick to themselves, they can. This is where people find their homes to settle roots” Brueggemann says.
The Arcadia neighborhood is a family-friendly community northwest of downtown Kalamazoo.

Highway 131 and I-94
Arcadia’s location is a primary draw. “It’s just next to WMU’s campus so it’s geographically close to campus, close to downtown, but it’s also close to getting on 131 or I-94 if someone needs to commute,” says Brueggemann.
It’s one of the few neighborhoods where drivers can reach either Highway 131 or Interstate 94 in less than 15 minutes. Arcadia is also just four and a half miles west of downtown Kalamazoo and a 10-minute drive from Western Michigan University.

Three residential areas
Arcadia is divided into three sections. Everything north of Arboretum Parkway is part of the Walden Woods subsection and has a typical modern suburban layout. Most homes in that area were constructed after 2018 and are new traditional colonial revivals and townhouses. Houses are about 1,800 square feet on average and sit on small lots, typically divided by a narrow driveway. They cost between $420,000 and $570,000.
South of Arboretum Parkway, the area is split evenly in half. The eastern half houses over 400 single-family homes and the western half is comprised of apartment complexes. The section with single-family homes is considered the “original” Acadia and is where the Arcadia Neighborhood Association was established.
It’s lined with stretching, established trees that create a canopy of greenery. Ranch, cape cod and colonial revival are the most common architectural styles and were typically built in the 1950s and 60s. These homes are usually between 1,000 and 2,500 square feet, depending on the architectural style, and sit on at least a quarter acre. They cost between $160,000 for about 1,000 square feet and climb to $390,000 for 2,200 square feet.
New townhomes have been built recently within the Arcadia neighborhood boundary.
Traditional styles like colonials and ranches dominate the Arcadia housing stock.
