Milwood
Older homes and a Golden Triangle
Many of Milwood’s Colonial-style homes were built around 1930 and often come with small kitchens unless they’ve been renovated. Newer ranch-style homes popped up in the 1950s, and the median year homes were built now sits at 1952. Despite the age of its homes, Milwood is now attracting increased attention from homebuyers. “It’s an older neighborhood, and people who sell in Milwood tend to buy homes in Milwood because they want to stay,” says Ben Barber, Realtor with Keller Williams Kalamazoo. “But now a lot of first-time buyers look in Milwood.” The most desirable section of homes sits between Portage Street and Lovers Lane, in an area dubbed the “Golden Triangle.” Outside of the triangle, Barber says, homes typically sell between $180,000 and $230,000. “In the Golden Triangle, prices are mostly over $300,000,” he says. The median price for a single-family home in Milwood is $210,000.
Interstate 94 from Chicago to Detroit
Milwood’s main thoroughfares, Portage Street and Lovers Lane, are lined with sidewalks, so residents can reach Milham Park, Rocket Comics and One Well Brewing by foot. On Portage, the sidewalks end intermittently towards the airport, so while the Air Zoo Aerospace and Science Museum can be reached by foot, the journey is long and the path is not entirely paved. Passing just north of the airport, Interstate 94 takes drivers as far east as Detroit and as far west as Chicago. The Kalamazoo Metro bus system operates stops along Milwood’s larger streets, giving residents an option for public transit.Barbecue, beer and comics
Shops and restaurants in Milwood tend toward small, local joints like Rocket Comics or Traveler’s Craft BBQ and Whiskey Bar. Residents head to El Ranchero on Portage Street or Harding’s Market on East Cork Street for groceries. Meijer has a location nearby, in South Westnedge, and Crossroad Park holds a Target, Barnes and Noble and The Crossroads Mall a little more than three miles southwest of Milwood’s Golden Triangle. Just next to Rocket Comics on Portage, One Well Brewing is Milwood’s local brewery. One side of the brewery holds a bar and dining tables; the other holds old-school pinball machines and arcade games like Galaga.Milham Park and Emerald Drive Park
Milwood bikers and walkers enjoy the paths of Milham Park, which pass over a creek running off of Monarch Millpond and weave through tall white oaks and other West Michigan trees. Within the park, Milham Park Golf Club gives residents an 18-hole course of rolling greens tucked among the trees. West of Milham Park and Milwood’s Golden Triangle, Emerald Drive Park is where dog walkers take their pups for a walk and local soccer teams hold weekend games. The Kalamazoo Promise
Milwood Elementary School serves neighborhood students with pre-kindergarten through 5th grade classes, earning a C-plus on Niche. Milwood Magnet School includes computer applications development as part of its required courses, and the school earns a C. High school students can have their college tuition covered by the Kalamazoo Promise by attending all four years of high school at the B-plus rated Loy Norrix High School. The scholarship program covers all costs of tuition and fees for students who attend all four years of high school at a Kalamazoo public school and graduate from the public school system and enroll as a full-time student at one of 60 specified Michigan colleges or universities.Events at Air Zoo, One Well and Wings Event Center
The Air Zoo Aerospace and Science Museum is a hotspot for field trips during the school year, and the museum holds local events to celebrate flight and its history. Within the museum’s restoration building, local volunteers work to restore dilapidated and often wrecked remnants of historic planes. One such project was an eleven-year effort to rebuild a Grumman FM-2 Wildcat, which spilled over the runway of its carrier as Ensign William E. Forbes landed the plane in 1944. The plane lay at the bottom of Lake Michigan until 2012, when the museum recovered the pieces and began its work. Though not as historic as Air Zoo, One Well Brewing has been a significant part of the Milwood community since its opening in 2014. The brewery’s anniversary—on Black Friday—has become an annual event for family’s in the area, as family members of any age can enjoy the brewery’s food and games. The Wings Event Center, home of the Kalamazoo Wings hockey team, brings a year-round list of live music and events.Jet noise and tornadoes
Homes in the south pocket of Milwood are closer to the airport, so jet noise drones on steadily in that area, creating some noise concern for potential homebuyers. A less common, though potentially more disastrous concern is tornadoes. Kalamazoo County has documented 26 confirmed tornadoes since records were started in 1954. In May of 2024, an EF2 tornado hit the area, displacing more than 100 families and damaging the FedEx shipping center on Portage Road. The tornado hit Air Zoo, scattering thousands of small artifacts, but skipped over the restoration building that holds the museum’s 11-year Wildcat restoration project.
