Beacon Hill is a centralized midtown community
At the crossroads of history and commercial, residential and business districts is Beacon Hill, a historically Black urban community of Kansas City's midtown. With downtown KC in its backyard, Beacon Hill is filled with long-standing residents who have seen the community through the good and the bad times. 20th-century homes and apartments line long, linear lots, where residents are within arm's reach of the city's most visited parks, shopping centers, museums and commutes to work at Hospital Hill. "It's up and coming, and people move here because it's a quick drive to everything," says Rachel Kilmer, a real estate agent with ReeceNichols, running the blog Rach the Realtor and giving an inside scoop on the culture of K.C.

Beacon Hill is about a mile from Crown Center, a shopping and entertainment district home to the Hallmark Visitors Center, The Coterie Theatre, Legoland Discovery Center and Sea Life. Restaurants include Unforked, which serves scratch-made breakfasts with locally sourced ingredients and Burnt End BBQ, which has earned first place in the American Royal Barbecue Championships for its Sweet Chipotle Glaze and Sweet Honey Glaze sauces. Lidia's is an upscale restaurant serving Northern Italian cuisine. In the winter, locals come skating at the Ice Terrace. "Vested Coffee is pretty popular with a few locations throughout the city," says Kilmer. The Combine is a low-key spot for Thursday's pizza and open mic nights. A no-frills joint with only outdoor seating — since the 1950s, Kitty's Cafe has been dishing out stacked burgers and tots.
