Families stay in neighborhood for generations
Families and friends in Palestine East socialize and stay connected to their community from the perch of large, covered front porches. This residential neighborhood 5 miles south of downtown Kansas City is a long, narrow strip between Cleveland and Jackson Avenues that runs from Linwood down to E. 39th Street in the heart of midtown. Residents can walk to parks, schools and mom-and-pop eateries. The VA hospital is one mile away.
Many families have stayed in the neighborhood for multiple generations, whether they rent or own their homes. More than half of residents own their homes. "There are schools right there. There is a good mix of families with school-age children up to people who have lived there most of their lives. Everybody has a front porch, which is what you see in neighborhoods in the urban areas which is how you got to know your neighbors and where you got to hang out and just talk. The front porch is still a gathering space," Sherri Oaks says. Oaks is a Realtor with Reece Nichols who's been selling homes in the area for two decades.

Easy access to Interstate 70 and U.S. Highway 71 simplifies commuting
Palestine East's location is just a mile from Interstate 70 and 2 miles from U.S. Highway 71, making it easy to commute anywhere in the metro area. Drivers can be in downtown Kansas City in about 10 minutes. Residents should be aware when traveling during heavy rain that the area south of E. 34th Street is at increased risk of flooding.
Although most people in the neighborhood get around by car, public transportation is an option. Numerous RideKC stops are located in and around the neighborhood.

First-time buyers and investors attracted to price point
With a median price of around $85,000, houses in Palestine East are some of the lowest-priced in the area, Joe Blackshere says. Blackshere is a Realtor with 1st Class Real Estate who's been selling homes in the area for seven years. "The prices are well below the greater Kansas City median range. It's got a great price range for a lot of buyers," he says. Craftsman-like homes, also known as Midwest shirtwaist-style homes, bungalows and ranch-style homes, are Palestine East's most common architectural styles. Many homes are on an incline with small, sloping lawns. Most were built between the 1930s and the 1970s, so trees are mature. Home prices range from $65,000 to $165,000.
Live reggae music at Sankofa Café within a mile
Palestine East is within a mile of several locally owned eateries, including DoubleBackZ and Brotha's Grill & Convenience Store. Both serve breakfast and lunch with burgers and wings. Sankofa Café and Bar is the place to go for curry, jerk chicken and live reggae music on the back patio. Residents can walk to grab groceries at Family Market, 35th Street Market and Happy Food Center, all just half a mile away. Larger grocery stores like Aldi and Sun Fresh Market are a mile away.
Seven Oaks Park and Central Park a mile away
Residents are within walking distance of the lush, 11-acre Seven Oaks Park. This green space features two tennis courts, a picnic shelter, basketball half-courts, a baseball diamond, a walking path, and a playground. Central Park is also less than a mile away. Its 10 acres include a walking trail, playground, recreation areas and native gardens. Right next door, the recently expanded Linwood/James B. Nutter, Sr. YMCA has an indoor pool and basketball court. It offers exercise, wellness and youth programs.

Central High School robotics team highly competitive
Students in the neighborhood attend George Melcher Elementary School, which receives a C-minus grade from Niche. They can move on to D-plus-rated Central Middle School and C-minus-rated Central High School. In 2023, Central High School's robotics team qualified for the international For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology (FIRST) championship.

Neighborhood scores high in violent crime
Palestine East's overall CAP Index crime score is 7, compared to the U.S. average of 4. The neighborhood scores very high in violent crime categories. As with any neighborhood or city, residents should always stay mindful of where they are. "If they're south of Linwood, it's probably a better area than north of Linwood. You get into the 20s and lower until you get to about 18th Street, and that area is a little bit crazier. Obviously, any neighborhood in any city could be block to block," Oaks says. All of Palestine East is south of Linwood.
K.C. celebrates Juneteenth, Jazz and Negro Leagues baseball at annual events
The Annual JuneteenthKC Heritage Festival in K.C.'s historic 18th and Vine Jazz District 3 miles away are some of the area's most anticipated events. Another summertime favorite is the annual Heart of America Hot Dog Festival, a mile away from the Jazz District at the Negro Leagues Baseball Museum.
