Families stay in neighborhood for generations
Families and friends in Palestine East socialize and stay connected to their community from the perch of large, covered front porches. This residential neighborhood 5 miles south of downtown Kansas City is a long, narrow strip between Cleveland and Jackson Avenues that runs from Linwood down to E. 39th Street in the heart of midtown. Residents can walk to parks, schools and mom-and-pop eateries. The VA hospital is one mile away.
Many families have stayed in the neighborhood for multiple generations, whether they rent or own their homes. More than half of residents own their homes. "There are schools right there. There is a good mix of families with school-age children up to people who have lived there most of their lives. Everybody has a front porch, which is what you see in neighborhoods in the urban areas which is how you got to know your neighbors and where you got to hang out and just talk. The front porch is still a gathering space," Sherri Oaks says. Oaks is a Realtor with Reece Nichols who's been selling homes in the area for two decades.

As with any neighborhood or city, residents should always stay mindful of where they are. "If they're south of Linwood, it's probably a better area than north of Linwood.
