Sterling Gardens offers quiet streets near dining and shopping
Ask a Sterling Gardens resident to describe their neighborhood, and they’d probably say, “We don’t take it for granted.” Resting on the fringes of eastside Kansas City and just steps from Independence, this area is often perceived as a bedroom community with little to offer besides a 12-mile commute to downtown. But that’s also its upside: quiet residential streets not too far out of the way – in fact, highly sought-after dining and shopping are just blocks away.
The Sterling neighborhood offers a plethora of greenery, retail options, and much more.
Sterling offers many retail shops with plenty of parking.

Local and chain restaurants surround the neighborhood
Since the neighborhood is predominantly residential – besides a couple churches – residents head 2 miles east for their morning burst of energy from Scooter’s. While it specializes in coffee like cold brews, candy bar lattes and Scooter Shooters – with an extra kick of espresso – it also has an extensive menu of teas, hot chocolate, lemonade and smoothies for kids, as well as food options ranging from maple waffle sandwiches to red velvet cake bites. Come hungry and count on leaving happy. “I love Scooter’s, and they’re popping up all over,” says Anna Castelli, Realtor for Realty Professionals Heartland. “It’s also very close to the restaurants on Little Blue Parkway, as well as all the restaurants on Noland Road.” Rather stay a little closer to home? Plan your next meal at New Canton. Less than a mile south of the neighborhood, this stop has authentic Chinese cuisine dominating the menu, with its lunch options ranging from shrimp lo mein to moo goo gai pan, while American and Chinese dishes clash for dinner. Grab crab Rangoon for an appetizer and hibachi chicken for an entrée, or go for chicken wings or barbecue ribs if you’re on the pickier side. Find even more options in neighboring Sterling Acres, home to chains like Church’s Texas Chicken and local mainstays like Ridgewood Donuts. A Walmart Supercenter sits within this entertainment corridor, too, for all things groceries and supplies.
If you like Italian food or romantic atmospheres, try V's Italiano Ristorante off US Hwy 40, near Sterling.

Mid-20th-century homes sit on large lots
You get a lot more space in Sterling Gardens. Homes here – mainly 1950s traditionals – sport lots spanning a quarter-acre or more, far larger than the densely packed properties closer to downtown. These lots tend to make for expansive, fenced backyards to go alongside the neighborhood’s other common amenities like small back porches and long driveways leading into one- or two-car garages. Most houses come with around 1,500 square feet and sell for around $180,000, but for rare finds exceeding 2,500 square feet, the price nears $300,000.
This charming, cottage-inspired home in Sterling, features a wraparound porch, gabled dormers, and a beautifully landscaped entrance that gives it a warm, storybook feel from the street.
Some homes in Sterling have large porches that run the length of the house.

Once they graduate into sixth grade, they move onto Raytown Middle and High schools, the latter of which has a B rating from Niche.

No parks in Sterling Gardens but golf is just a mile away
Though Sterling Gardens doesn’t have any outdoor play options, either, you don’t have to go far to work off your meal. Just a mile east sits Royal Meadows Golf Club, an 18-hole public course with a full-service pro shop to boot. You can sharpen your swing at one of the weekly leagues, divided by age and skill level, or sign up for one of its many tournaments held throughout the year. Royal Meadows is also a popular wedding spot, with the ability to hold outings of up to 200 people, fully providing equipment ranging from carts to tables.
Santa Fe Park Dog Park offers plenty of space and fun agility features, giving pups a place to run, climb, and burn off energy.
