Suburban living with retail nearby

West of Ewa, a worthy companion to Honolulu’s popularity, is now found in three connected areas: Makakilo, Kapolei and Honokai Hale. This trio’s residential, retail and recreation options offer a tapestry of Oahu living. Nathalie Mullinix, President and Broker for Nathalie Mullinix Realty Universal, Inc., adds, "Homes on this side of the island enjoy the drier weather and are often more affordable in comparison to Kailua and Kahala. Residents are drawn here to be within minutes of the Ko'olina Resort and the less crowded Waianae beaches close by. Plus, depending on how high up you live, the visibility all the way to Diamond Head is fabulous."

Million-dollar mansions and more

In Makakilo, you can find a range of homes from one-bedroom townhouses in several developments for around $200,000 to multi-million-dollar mansions in the gated, ridgetop Kumulani community. A variety of custom homes line Makakilo’s hillsides, some with Spanish roof tiles and others with rooftop solar panels. Along northern streets in Makakilo, gorgeous stucco and siding mansions offer balcony expanses for gazing over ocean views. Makakilo’s landscape features stonework walls along layered terraces, and its lower streets offer a collection of traditional Hawaiian plantation-style homes with broad, low-pitch roofs.

Just a short drive down the ridge is the master-planned community of Kapolei, known as Second City. Developed on a coastal plain once carpeted with tall stalks of sugar cane, this urban center was thoughtfully designed to address Honolulu’s rapid growth. Low-rise buildings that aesthetically balance with the natural topography are crafted in coral, stone and wood. As an investment in Hawaii’s clean energy future, sustainability initiatives here include the state’s largest ground-mounted solar energy farm. Homes in Kapolei range from a variety of earth-tone townhouses to large four-bedroom beauties built in the 2000s and beyond.

The tranquil bedroom community of Honokai Hale offers a sanctuary from bustle while living right beside Ko’olina Resort’s amenities and within a short drive down Farrington Highway to Kapolei’s plethora of conveniences. Along Ko’olina’s lushly landscaped streets, you’ll see a range of gated custom homes and immense stucco stunners with Ko’olina fairway greens just steps from the yard.
