Kelliwood
Katy Independent School District’s top-rated schools
The Katy Independent School District is the best district in the Houston area by Niche, which gives it an A-plus rating. Hazel S. Pattison Elementary School is one of four local A-rated schools that serve pre-kindergarteners through fifth graders. Students are divided across three middle schools, such as Garland McMeans Junior High School, which earns an A-plus, before attending A-plus-rated schools such as Taylor High or Cinco Ranch High. Both schools offer a plethora of extracurricular activities and sports leagues. "Football is big around here. It's very much like 'Friday Night Lights,'" Garza says. The area also includes private options like Epiphany of the Lord Catholic School and Primrose School of Kelliwood.New Traditionals and Mediterranean-style homes
Development in Kelliwood began in 1982 with Kickerillo, a luxury home builder. Since then, the area has grown into a collection of gated and ungated neighborhoods. "I live in one of the older gated communities around a lake," Garza says. "It's very quiet, and my neighborhood has more retirees. But then you have other developments with centralized community pools and parks that attract more families." Wide streets throughout the neighborhood give way to spacious single-family brick New Traditionals with lush lawns and Mediterranean-style lakefront estates priced from half a million to over $1.5 million. Many properties feature private pools, large lots, and two- or three-car garages, and HOA fees are standard. Other roads feature older, single-story ranch-style homes with modern Texas touches. These homes typically sell for less, ranging from the upper-$200,000s to the $500,000s.Neighborhood parks, pools, lakes and golf courses
Kelliwood brims with outdoor community amenities. Most subdivisions feature their own neighborhood park, such as Kelliwood Gardens' recreation center, which boasts an outdoor pool, tennis courts and basketball courts. Residents can hop around Kelliwood's non-gated communities, such as Westgreen Park's playground and splash pad. Several subdivisions like Kelliwood Links, back up to Willow Fork Country Club, a members-only club that offers an 18-hole golf course, tennis facilities, a pool, a restaurant and community events.Kelliwood's sprawling community borders George Bush Park, where 7,800 acres of woodlands and marshland give way to dozens of amenities within the Barker Reservoir. Sports facilities range from baseball to soccer fields. Hobbyists can fly their miniature model planes and drones down the road at the Scobee Radio Control Flying Field. Other amenities include a large playground, a dog park with ponds to cool off furry friends, stocked fishing ponds and a shooting range. Kelliwood residents can also explore an 11-mile wooded trail. Others can stroll along the paved Buffalo Bayou Trail, which leads into the City of Katy, or jog around the nearby Nottingham Country Greenbelt.
Proximity to shopping and dining options
Grocery stores, big-box retailers and dining options line busy roads like South Mason Road and the Interstate 10 Frontage Road. LaCenterra at Cinco Ranch is a premier outdoor shopping mall with a Trader Joe's, shops and eateries about 5 miles from Kelliwood. The Rouxpour is one of several waterside restaurants, with a relaxed outdoor patio known for its Creole classics like lump crab and sausage gumbo, crawfish etouffee and fresh oysters. Al-fresco dining is clustered around an open green space with an outdoor amphitheater regularly hosting live musicians. "You'd normally go to LaCenterra for its atmosphere and maybe pop into a shop while you're there," Garza says, but she also points out that Katy Mills is the go-to place for heavy-duty shopping sprees, with over 175 retailers and outlet stores.Weekends in Kelliwood can include family outings to Typhoon Texas Waterpark or Andretti Indoor Karting & Games. Just north of Interstate 10, other family-friendly options include PopStroke, a restaurant with an outdoor mini-golf course, and Home Run Dug Out, which features a lively patio centered around a turf ball field and indoor batting cage simulators.
Katy's diverse houses of worship
The area is home to a diverse and connected community. "We're more diverse than the typical Texas suburb because we're so close to the Energy Corridor," Garza says, referring to Houston’s abundance of global energy company corporate offices. "We're talking about every part of the world. You'll have people transferred here from Dubai who choose to live in Katy or the Woodlands for the homes and schools." Local houses of worship reflect the area's diversity, ranging from churches to mosques. "The Second Baptist Church is massive. It's impossible to miss when you're on I-10," Garza says.Commutes around Houston’s suburbs
Sprawling suburban streets make Kelliwood a car-dependent community. Several hospitals are nearby, including Houston Methodist West Hospital and Houston Methodist Continuing Care Hospital. George Bush Intercontinental Airport is about 40 miles away, and Downtown Houston is about 30 miles east via Interstate 10. Other nearby thoroughfares include state routes 99 and 6.
