In a tiny, dirt floor jail cell called The Kemp Calaboose, the infamous Bonnie of the bank-robbing duo Bonnie and Clyde was jailed right here in the little town of Kaufman in 1932, after a failed bank heist. This city is among the oldest inhabited communities of the Three Forks of the Trinity River area, just 30 miles from downtown Dallas. Kaufman's history dates back to 1840 and many of its historic buildings have been transformed into lofts, restaurants and town offices with the addition of new developments. “It still maintains its small-town feel, with the added ease to get to Dallas for work,” says Casey Townsend, broker associate with Elsie Halbert Real Estate, who works in Kaufman. With well-regarded schools, a lake and annual events, Kaufman draws residents looking for a rural lifestyle with plenty of amenities not too far from the city.

Leafy lawns and new constructions in Kaufman
Kaufman’s residential streets satellite from downtown and unfold in a grid layout, with medium-sized lots bathed in mesquite and oak trees. Some streets have sidewalks and residences usually include attached garages and driveways. “Out in the rural areas, you’ll see the more ranch-style and farm-type properties, but you do have some Victorian-era architecture in town,” Townsend says. Further from downtown, new developments become prominent, reflecting larger new-traditional homes constructed with brick, stone and arched entryways. Prices range from $224,000 for a home built in the 1900s to over $375,000 for 2023 builds.
