A pedestrian-friendly community in close proximity to amenities
Roosevelt is a small, walkable neighborhood formed around a community park of the same name. “It’s definitely an iconic older neighborhood,” says Dennis DuChene, president of Visit Kenosha. The neighborhood's history dates to the early 20th century and is evident through its historic landmarks and longstanding homes. Alongside short walks to the park and the community's namesake elementary school, residents can frequent restaurants and city-wide events held downtown. "It's known as a moderate single-family home district with some commercial businesses sprinkled throughout, specifically along Roosevelt Road," DuChene says.
Roosevelt Road's local spots
Casual dining options are available along Roosevelt Avenue, which bisects the neighborhood. The longstanding Andy's Drive-In reopened in 2023, with its retro-diner looks intact. Cozy booths, automotive décor and a black-and-red color scheme set the scene for lunch and dinner. Similarly, Oliver's Bakery has been in the community for more than 70 years and provided many a Kenoshan's birthday cake. Other local restaurants along the stretch include La Fe Café, a laid-back Mexican spot and House of Gerhard, which serves classic German food. For groceries, Piggly Wiggly sits a few blocks southwest of the community. Southport Plaza sits just west, home to big-name retailers like Kohl’s, Hobby Lobby and several others. Roosevelt is 3 miles southwest of downtown, the city’s walkable hub for boutiques, more eateries and museums.

Bungalows, Dutch Colonials and ranch-style homes
Roosevelt's sidewalks run along suburban-style streets, with oak and linden trees supplying seasonal shade and color. Many of its grid-like blocks feature back alleyways leading to detached garages and space for parking. However, most early 20th-century homes feature driveways long enough to park multiple vehicles. Early 1900s bungalows and Dutch Colonials, alongside some 1950s ranch-style homes, are present throughout the community. These sit on quarter-acre lots with gardening space. Along with Roosevelt Road’s businesses, these homes share space with historical landmarks such as Roosevelt Elementary School and Saint Mary’s Roman Catholic Church, both built around 1930. Homes typically sell between $160,000 and $270,000, depending on size and condition.

Afterschool trips to Roosevelt Park
Short walks lead to Roosevelt Park, which sits at the heart of the community. "It's home to one of the city's splash pads for free use in the summertime, along with a playground, basketball court and more," DuChene says. The smaller Bullamore Park is two blocks east and is frequented by those with younger children, thanks to its addition of a toddler playset in 2019. Wolfenbuttel Park is a 2-mile trip northeast and doubles as a beach for enjoying summer days on the shores of Lake Michigan. When Wisconsin winters hit, Southwest Neighborhood Library offers indoor programming like crafting and game nights.

Kenosha's annual events
Kris Kochman, community relations liaison for the city, says popular annual events include the Outta Site Kite Flight in June and the Civic Veterans Parade, a long-held tradition held on the Sunday before the Fourth of July. For the Fourth, a multiday festival, Celebrate America, is held at the lakefront. "With Kenosha's auto-manufacturing history, car shows are really popular here," Kochman says of the days when Nashes, American Motors cars, Renault and Chryslers were built in the city. "There's a really big one — the Kenosha Classic Cruise-In on the Saturday of Labor Day weekend." Despite the cold, winter activities also bring out crowds. February's Snow Daze Festival at Veterans Memorial Park downtown features more than 50 ice sculptures and free skating at the ice rink the city puts up.
