Small town with proximity to work opportunities
Halfway between Charlotte and Columbia, Kershaw was originally a small railroad town and never lost that rural feel. "It's a close-knit community where people help each other out," says Mark Dorman, the mayor of Kershaw. "When someone is sick, people go over and bring them food or help fundraise for medical bills — that's what close-knit means to me." The town offers quaint living near its center and rural living on the surrounding land. The town is growing fast as a working population moves in for the Haile Gold Mine, 3 miles away. For commuting to big cities, Kershaw is 20 miles south of Lancaster and 60 miles south of Charlotte.
Private living on large lots
Near the heart of the town, streets adhere to a grid pattern with shaded sidewalks lining the main roads. Farther out, small rural roads wind through dense trees, and houses are separated by large stretches of land. The area is populated by brick ranch-style homes built in the mid-1900s and larger contemporary houses. Prices range from $100,000 to $300,000, and farmhouses with lots around 30 acres can get up to $700,000.
You can also find homes in Kershaw that date back to the early 1900s.
You can find farmhouses with up to 30 acres or more of land in Kershaw.
Smaller historical homes are also popular in Kershaw.

Pre-k support and artsy schools
"One project I'm very proud of is our First Steps 4k program for pre-kindergarten care," says Dorman. "There was an old bank built in 1912 that had stood vacant for years, and the community worked together to renovate it; now it's an accessible 4k center in the heart of Kershaw." After 4k at the renovated Clyburn Early Childhood Center, kids attend Kershaw Elementary School, which is walkable from houses near the town center. Then it's on to Andrew Jackson Middle and Andrew Jackson High School, next door to each other and about 3 miles north. All three schools get a B-minus rating from Niche. Andrew Jackson High has a visual and performing arts center that makes it the arts focus school for Lancaster County. Kids who attend Andrew Jackson Middle and High get opportunities to go to Charlotte, Washington DC and New York for arts-related field trips and enjoy an expanded curriculum in the creative fields.
The Kershaw Elementary School serves students in grades PK, K-5.
The Andrew Jackson Middle School in Kershaw has just over 470 students.
The Andrew Jackson High School in Kershaw, SC serves students in grades 9-12.
