Small town with proximity to work opportunities

Halfway between Charlotte and Columbia, Kershaw was originally a small railroad town and never lost that rural feel. "It's a close-knit community where people help each other out," says Mark Dorman, the mayor of Kershaw. "When someone is sick, people go over and bring them food or help fundraise for medical bills — that's what close-knit means to me." The town offers quaint living near its center and rural living on the surrounding land. The town is growing fast as a working population moves in for the Haile Gold Mine, 3 miles away. For commuting to big cities, Kershaw is 20 miles south of Lancaster and 60 miles south of Charlotte.

Private living on large lots

Near the heart of the town, streets adhere to a grid pattern with shaded sidewalks lining the main roads. Farther out, small rural roads wind through dense trees, and houses are separated by large stretches of land. The area is populated by brick ranch-style homes built in the mid-1900s and larger contemporary houses. Prices range from $100,000 to $300,000, and farmhouses with lots around 30 acres can get up to $700,000.

Pre-k support and artsy schools

"One project I'm very proud of is our First Steps 4k program for pre-kindergarten care," says Dorman. "There was an old bank built in 1912 that had stood vacant for years, and the community worked together to renovate it; now it's an accessible 4k center in the heart of Kershaw." After 4k at the renovated Clyburn Early Childhood Center, kids attend Kershaw Elementary School, which is walkable from houses near the town center. Then it's on to Andrew Jackson Middle and Andrew Jackson High School, next door to each other and about 3 miles north. All three schools get a B-minus rating from Niche. Andrew Jackson High has a visual and performing arts center that makes it the arts focus school for Lancaster County. Kids who attend Andrew Jackson Middle and High get opportunities to go to Charlotte, Washington DC and New York for arts-related field trips and enjoy an expanded curriculum in the creative fields.

Locally-owned restaurants

Within town limits, Brenda Kay's Café, known for its brunch, and 521 Filling Station, known for its steak, are popular restaurants. For a sweet treat, Creighton's Creamery is a trendy spot that offers a selection of coffee and homemade ice cream, and Kershaw House of Pizza is the go-to spot for Italian food. To stock up on groceries, residents have two choices: Small's Food Center in the north side of town and Kershaw IGA in the south. Stop by 2nd Chance Consignment & Crafts for unique second-hand shopping or Rustic Outfitters, a trendy clothing store. Get outdoors at Stevens Park

Stevens Park is a community hub for outdoor fun, including a walking trail, picnic pavilion, skate park and swimming pool. During the summer, the outdoor amphitheater hosts music festivals and movie nights, and during winter, the park lights up with a holiday light display. Kids are partial to the park's colorful playground, which playfully resembles an old railroad town that honors the town's origins. A bit further south, the Kershaw Golf Club hosts regular golf tournaments. And the 40 Acre Rock Heritage Preserve lies 15 miles away from the town center. The Preserve lives up to its name, consisting of a large rock that visitors can hike on top of.

Country fun at annual events

In the spring, the community comes to life during Springathon, a weekend festival with carnival games, a car show and booths offering food and merchandise. During football season, the Tailgate Festival is another popular community celebration. Pull up to Richards Park for a day full of food trucks, bingo and live music. And, of course, the big game is projected on screens, with live performances from the high school cheer team.
