Hop, skip and a jump from Modesto and Turlock

Between downtown Modesto and Turlock, Keyes is a census-designated place exuding a small-town feel with a rich culture. Cocooned by farmland, Keyes is far from the hubbub and across from Route 99 lies many manufacturing facilities. Brimming with taco trucks, parks and a tight-knit community, this Stanislaus County suburb offers residents a slower pace of life with the pleasures of bigger cities just a short drive away. "It's a small, quiet town and though there's not much here but neighborhoods, it has much culture that is evident driving around," says Jessica Barrios, Broker and owner of Barrios Realty Consultants and resident of Modesto.

New subdivisions and cozy homes

Keyes has experienced much growth in recent years, with brand-new subdivisions popping up. These designs reflect Mediterranean and Spanish-revival architectural influences. Soft tan and cream ranch-style homes line palm and pine tree-shaded sidewalks, leading to spacious front yards adorned with cacti and shrubs. Houses typically feature attached garages or covered driveways and are accentuated by fenced backyards enclosing backyard pools and decks. With most homes built in the late 20th century and late 2010s, neighborhoods are laid out in a grid and positioned near highways, schools and parks. Homes typically range from $300,000, starting at 1,000 square feet, reaching upwards of $500,000 for 2,000 square feet. "I love Keyes because it's a lesser price point than Turlock, but it's also just one exit away from all it offers," Barrios says.

Grab lunch at a taco truck

Though there are no bustling shopping districts, there is a Dollar General and residents can head to State Foods supermarket on 7th street when needed to restock the pantry. Tacos El Hidalguense 21 is usually parked next to the supermarket and is raved for being one of the best taco spots around, plating up authentic street tacos and stuffed burritos. For some fresh Mexican sweet bread, bolillos and teleras, Diana's Panderia is the place. But taquerias aren't uncommon in Keyes. Also on 7th street are Tacos El Granero #2 and Carmelita's, gathering a line, especially during lunchtime. Big box retailers like Target, Petco and Home Depot are found 4 miles south at Monte Vista Crossing in Turlock, surrounded by stores and Turlock Cinema. Vintage Faire North is 12 miles away, buzzing with residents browsing its hundreds of retailers during the holidays and weekends.

Sunny days at the playground and community center

Bonita Ranch Park lies at the northern center of Keyes, and as its name may suggest, it is 'pretty,' unfolding with large grassy areas and two playgrounds enclosed by circular sandboxes. It's common to see neighbors walking the dogs or shooting hoops at the playground. A few streets down is Hatch Park, though little but a baseball field— next to it is the Keyes Community Center and Keyes Public Library, hosting story times, craft events and book clubs.

Let's go antiquing or to the county fair

About 6 miles away, El Rematito Crows Landing Flea Market is where locals rummage for antiques and artisan goods and revel in food trucks. Diamond Bar Arena is 3 miles west, where residents sit in wonder watching the El Vaquero Rancho Roping, barrel races and cattle cutting. In July, the Stanislaus County Fair brings locals far and wide for live music, family-friendly games, food and rodeo festivities.
