Friendly North Shore community anchored by a historic town center

Known for being one of Kaua’i’s former sugar plantation sites, Kilauea combines the North Shore’s coastal cliffs and beaches with a rich agricultural landscape. Not to be confused with the volcano of the same name on the Big Island, this neighborhood is a suburban network of residential homes surrounding the historic Kilauea Town, welcoming visitors and lifetime residents alike with its vibrant aloha spirit. “Kilauea is not a destination; it’s a lifestyle. From Kilauea Town to the farm outskirts, people love to commune with each other, ride bikes and live close to nature,” says Stephanie Michel, a Realtor with Oceanfront Sotheby’s International Realty who lives nearby. “The beach is integral here, not just for laying out, but for surfing, swimming and snorkeling. We hold most of our celebrations at the beach and share all our resources.” With its picturesque beaches and a hub of shopping and dining, Kilauea blends beauty and convenience in a tight-knit, easygoing community.

From multimillion-dollar seaside mansions to quaint cottages

Homes in Kilauea range from private, fenced estates set back from the road to quaint houses that sit side-by-side on central streets. Kaua’i’s fertile climate is evident in the verdant lawns dotted with tropical flowers and palm trees. Some small cottages built in the 1980s can list for around $850,000, while modest single-level ranch-style homes and brightly painted two-story plantation-style houses tend to start at $1 million. Tucked away in the forested hills, multi-level mansions and luxury stunners with wraparound windows and balconies boast cliffside views. Featuring amenities like resort-style pools and multiple acres to stretch out on, these estate homes typically start at $6 million. But asking prices can climb to more than $14 million properties that overlook Secret Beach.

Secluded beaches and wildlife are cared for by the community

There’s always a place to find serenity in Kilauea, including Kauapea Beach, where residents take a dip in the water or enjoy quiet walks. Here, beachgoers can enter the trailhead off Secret Beach Road and hike a dirt path to the secluded lava rocks at Secret Beach. At this swimsuit-optional hideaway, “the surf can make swimming very dangerous,” Michel says, “but when it’s safe, you can find some gorgeous tidepools.” She adds, “One of our most significant treasures is the Kilauea Point Wildlife Refuge around the Kilauea Lighthouse. We take wildlife preservation seriously here, and we work together to protect and care for our nene, albatross and other birds. We do a lot of rescue work and educational classes at the lighthouse to protect this beautiful place where majestic animals find sanctuary.”
