Luxurious village on the Great Neck peninsula
A century ago, a young writer moved to the Long Island community of Great Neck, where luxurious estates and outlandish parties would inspire him to write a novel. The writer was F. Scott Fitzgerald, and the book was “The Great Gatsby.” On the north end of the Great Neck peninsula is the village of Kings Point; though it remains a spot for posh real estate, its populace is more varied than the business tycoons and New York stockbrokers who appeared in Fitzgerald’s novel. It’s home to a sizable Jewish community, as well as the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy’s 900 midshipmen. “It’s a very warm community,” says resident Jordan Benjamin, who owns DJ Jordan deejay company. “They do all kinds of Jewish holidays. I do a lot of weddings and bar mitzvahs for the Jewish and Persian communities.” Surrounded on three sides by water, Kings Point offers a home for those who want a well-maintained residential neighborhood removed from the city.

High-dollar homes on Gatsby Lane
Even among New York’s high-end real estate market, Kings Point stands apart. The village’s median sales price is $3 million, which not only reflects the allure of the neighborhood but also the grandeur of the homes. The average home size is about 9,000 square feet, more than four times the national average. Houses may be a five-bedroom Tudor Revival built in the Roaring Twenties or a newly constructed modernist mansion. More modest four-bedroom Cape Cods exist as well. A jaunt down most streets will reveal manicured shrubs and brick driveways leading to homes perched on oversized lots. Prices start around $700,000 for a three-bedroom house, while buyers can expect to pay $10 million or more for a waterfront estate on the aptly named Gatsby Lane. Per FEMA, flood zones extend into residential areas along the coast and near the creek running through the center of the neighborhood.

Restaurants, bakeries line Middle Neck Road
There are few businesses in Kings Point, but less than a mile south of the village, shops and eateries appear along Middle Neck Road. Baker Hill Tavern pours drinks past midnight, Marie Blachère Bakery & Café sells French pastries and Everfresh Supermarket stocks kosher-friendly groceries. Benjamin recommends following the road 2 miles south of Kings Point to Zen Garden, a vegan restaurant. “I’m in there maybe once a week.” A post office, hardware store and handful of pharmacies further boost the convenience of Middle Neck Road. Jewish residents have access to three synagogues that border Kings Point. Others have to leave the peninsula to attend one of the many churches, mosques and temples on Long Island. It’s a 4-mile drive to the hamlet of Manhasset, where locals can catch a movie at Manhasset Cinemas or receive treatment at North Shore University Hospital. Folks on the west side of Kings Point may live next to the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy, but the service academy isn’t considered to be a noisy neighbor. Civilians can walk the school grounds and visit the U.S. Merchant Marine Museum during the week.

Sledding and softball at Kings Point Park
Kings Point Park offers 5 miles of forested trails to hike. In the center, the trees part into a clearing where softball diamonds and tennis courts await. The park’s sledding hill and cross-country skiing trail make the park a worthwhile visit even when snow starts to fall in the winter. Boat owners can moor their vessels at Steppingstone Marina. Those who don’t own a boat are able to rent sailboats and kayaks to explore the bay and maybe get a close-up look at the 145-year-old Stepping Stones Lighthouse. Those too young to pilot a vessel can stay ashore at the pirate ship-themed playground.

Waterfront concerts at Steppingstone Park
Steppingstone Park’s waterside stage hosts concerts every summer, drawing Grammy-winning artists such as Wyclef Jean and Ne-Yo. Two miles to the south, the village of Great Neck puts on frequent community events. These include Sunday farmers markets and Taste of Great Neck, a sampling of restaurants and bakeries on the peninsula.

A car-dependent village
A lack of sidewalks and streetlamps restricts the village’s walkability, Benjamin says. “You definitely need a car to live in the area.” A commute to Manhattan requires a 20-mile drive, which can take up to two hours in the city’s sluggish traffic. It’s possible to head 2 miles south of Kings Point and hop on the Long Island Railroad Great Neck Station and ride into the city. John F. Kennedy International Airport and LaGuardia Airport are both 17 miles away.
Most streets in Kings Point do not have sidewalks or street lamps so a car is needed.
