Lake County's Kirtland is known as the "city of faith and beauty," due to the region's expansive green spaces. A substantial portion of the community is dedicated to state parks and reservations.
Among the rolling hills of Kirtland are a variety of homes, and many are constructed between the mid-20th century and early 21st century. Charming brick Cape Cods and distinguished Colonials are among the most established residences in the neighborhood. You'll see a collection of ranches and split levels that add variety to the streetscape. The area also contains a manufactured home community. Students of all ages will attend Kirtland Local School District. Each grade level visits the shared campus along Chillicothe Road. According to Niche, Kirtland Elementary is considered a top-performing school within Lake County. Sixth to eighth graders spend the day at Kirtland Middle, which earned a B+ grade on Niche. The hometown high school draws enthusiastic crowds on Friday nights. Young residents, their parents and alums will gather in the stadiums to cheer on their beloved Hornets during a football game. The community also has roots in higher education. Lakeland Community College has been part of the region's northwest corner for over 50 years.
About 20 percent of the land in Kirtland is dedicated to reservations and parks. Roger Talka, a Realtor with Howard Hanna, says "Kirtland is very scenic. There are a lot of vast, open fields. Occasionally, I enjoy driving to the city and having lunch there because the surroundings are beautiful." Within the wetlands of the Penitentiary Glen Reservation are over eight miles of hiking trails with interactive discovery sites for children and a nature center. The Holden Arboretum has some of the most optimal viewings for Kirtland's verdant, picturesque landscape. If you're not afraid of heights, consider scaling the Kalberer Emergent Tower, which stretches 120 feet in the air for a unique view of the treetops. Brave residents will also cross over the canopy walk. This elevated bridge is made of wood and metal cords suspended in the air for scenic, picture-worthy views. Chapin Forest Reservation holds a sandstone quarry that was used to build some of the community's earliest structures. The reserve is also a popular winter spot for its onsite lodge ski center. You can get close and personal with horses, sheep and other animals at Farmpark. The public green space also contains the Meadow Dog Park, where man's best friend can run free. The grounds have hosted several beloved events, such as the Village Peddler Festival and Vintage Ohio event, also known as Wine Fest.
Downtown Kirtland runs along Chillicothe Road, where you'll find specialty shops like Mike's Market and several restaurants. Although the neighborhood contains a number of pizza spots, Angelo's Pizzeria is one of the local favorites. If you are in a hurry for ice cream, you can order a cone or a shake at Kirtland Creamery's drive-thru. The local watering hole, Just One More Tavern, is known for its laid-back atmosphere and jumbo chicken wings.
Kirtland has a significant history in the Church of Latter-day Saints that is still visible today. The local government restored a series of buildings that now act as exhibits once erected by faith-based leaders in the late 1800s. Today, a sawmill, a general store, and an old red schoolhouse can still be seen in the downtown area. Kirtland is a quaint community with a rural, almost nostalgic small-town feel in Lake County.
