Take your foot off the gas and enjoy slow country living in Washington Township. Consider a move here if you're outdoorsy or enjoy a lot of peace and quiet. This rural region is about as remote as you can get without losing access to major roadways. Pennsylvania Route 268 routes locals into busy Butler and central Pittsburgh.
Most Washington Township homes line the Allegheny River, many with private docks where locals store their personal vessels. These waterfront properties have sold in the $600,000s in recent months. You may come across an old farmhouse off a quiet, tree-hedged road, but these are typically multi-generational residences that don't change hands often. Washington Township's remote locality renders an unpredictable housing market. "There isn't a lot of real estate, period," says Joan Sorce, Realtor at RE/MAX Select Realty. You may find a listing or two at a time here, where natural scenery reigns over real estate development. "There are not enough homes on the market," says Debbie Macurak, Realtor at Berkshire Hathaway, born and raised nearby. "Everything is always so up in the air."
Washington Township kids can attend school within the Armstrong District. Many start at West Hill Primary School, rated B-minus on Niche, and continue to West Hills Intermediate, rated C-plus. Karns City High is the last stop for many rising freshmen, with an overall C rating. Drop-offs and pickups can be a bit of a hike in this outskirts area, where many residents drive 35 minutes or more to the school campuses. Kids can also hop on a bus to simplify the weekly schedule.
After school, the kids head to Sugarcreek Community Park for cheer practice and football games. The disc golf course is popular with the locals, uniquely built with climbing apparatus' and found materials facilitating creative, challenging play. Residents also head to the many local hiking areas in their free time - carved paths trace the lapping river shoreline, funneling into thick woodland for a peaceful excursion. Sorce recommends a trip to the popular Paradise Park for live music and community events. These gatherings are planned weekly during Pittsburgh's warmer months, busy with food vendors, and visitors camped out in front of the covered amphitheater that dates to 1973. There are also state game lands in town, busy during hunting season.
Kittaning is your closest town, where Washington Township locals can pick up groceries at Shop 'n Save and wrap up their weekly errands at Walmart Supercenter around the corner. "We could use a small-town grocery store," Macurak says. East Brady's tiny town center is a convenient stopover for a bite to eat. The Old Bank Deli & Coffee Shoppe serves sandwiches and caffeinated beverages from its cozy, historic spot. If you're more of a night owl, All Stars' dim-lit divey digs host regulars who visit to watch the game with whatever's on tap and bar snacks.
Washington Township's workforce is led by the local health care system and school district, with locations about 20 minutes away, or roughly 15 miles. "The main interstate is also about 20 minutes away," Sorce says, which routes you directly into the city for a 50-mile ride. This outer borough is a driving town with scenic rural commutes. Long country roads, river access and picturesque pastureland await in northeastern Pittsburgh's Washington Township.
