Alice Bell
Booming commercial center along I-640
Alice Bell has a booming commercial center on the northeast corner of the neighborhood where Interstates 640 and 40 converge. This area is a hub for big-box shopping with a Walmart, Lowe's, Home Depot and Target. There are various fast food chains and casual sit-down chains such as Applebee's, Cracker Barrel and Texas Roadhouse. Bulk items are available at Sam's Club, while Aldi offers a quick grocery trip. Taco Madres puts a Mexican spin on a sports bar that serves both Mexican and American pub staples in a relaxed atmosphere. The new Amazon facility is located here at the site of the former East Towne Mall. And housing development on the east side is keeping pace with commercial development, with new apartment and condo complexes convenient to the shopping areas.
Diverse housing styles in Alice Bell
West of the bustling commercial area, Alice Bell maintains a quiet residential atmosphere with meandering, hilly streets and pockets of oak and elm trees. This area has a diverse mix of single-family homes, apartments, duplexes and condos. New Traditional homes with two-car garages are clustered together in newer subdivisions. Brick ranch-style homes, Cape Cods and cottages are typical in the area — and often on lots larger than a quarter-acre. Despite its conveniences, this neighborhood has a median single-family home price of much lower than the city's average. "It's one of those areas where prices have not caught up to the rest of the Knoxville market," Swann says. "In this area, you're still able to buy houses for anywhere between $200,0000 and $350,000."Camaraderie and play at Alice Bell Park
Green space is a highlight for this neighborhood, home to the centrally-located Alice Bell Park. Sitting on 12 acres, this park hosts youth baseball and softball games through the Knoxville Falcons, a nonprofit organization dedicated to opening up sports opportunities for kids. The park's Richard Leake Community Center, open Monday through Friday, offers an indoor gym and basketball courts and programming for all ages, such as senior pickleball and summer camps for kids. Golf is another popular activity here. Just west, the Whittle Springs Golf Course is a public 18-hole course with tee times starting at $20.Students attend Knox County Schools
The neighborhood is part of Knox County Schools, earning an overall B-plus from Niche. Younger kids have a quick trip to school, with the C-plus-rated Spring Hill Elementary located right inside the neighborhood. Whittle Springs Middle, about 2 miles west, earns a B-minus. Teens may either attend Fulton High, which earns a B-minus, or Austin-East Magnet High, which earns a C-plus. Austin-East is a performing arts magnet high school offering dance, audio production and theater programs among other arts opportunities. Richard Yoakley is a public alternative school in the neighborhood that is unrated by Niche. It follows a trauma-informed curriculum that provides additional academic, social/emotional and behavioral support.Boos and brews at the Knoxville Zoo
Zoo Knoxville is just south of the neighborhood and offers various kid-friendly activities such as riding the train, cooling down at the splash pad and riding with a parent on the zipline. The zoo also hosts several special events throughout the year. In October, there's Brew at the Zoo — general admission includes a tasting glass and unlimited samples from 35 craft breweries — and Boo! At the Zoo, the Halloween event that's not too scary for preschool and elementary-aged kids. It features trick-or-treating along the Boo! Trail.Seven-mile drive to Downtown Knoxville
With a sprawling layout and not many sidewalks, driving is preferable in Alice Bell. Surrounded by Interstate 40 and its shorter spur route, I-640, the neighborhood is well-connected to the rest of Knoxville. Interstate 40 leads directly to downtown Knoxville, located about 7 miles southwest. The number 23 bus, via Knoxville Area Transit, also departs for downtown Knoxville every hour.
