Verdant Tennessee community rooted in limestone heritage

Where the Tennessee River splits into the Holston and French Broad Rivers lies Asbury-Forks of the River. Home to numerous quarry sites dedicated to mining limestone, the rural Knoxville community owes much of its character to the abundant presence of marble and limestone, which have shaped the city’s heritage. Geologists have observed that Tennessee marble, often displaying a pinkish hue, is a form of crystalline limestone. Despite this scientific distinction, it has been called “Tennessee marble” for over two centuries. Today, Asbury-Forks of the River is still known for its natural amenities while offering a quiet, sparse suburban feel on the outskirts of Knoxville.

Classic architecture in the Great Appalachia

The architectural landscape of Asbury-Forks of the River blends with the rolling, hilled terrain that characterizes Knoxville’s location in the long and narrow ridges of the Great Appalachian Valley. Some residences are settled along the Holton and French Broad Rivers. Suburban divisions feature a range of home styles, from Colonial Revival and brick ranch homes with meticulously maintained lawns to contemporary designs on acres of farmland. Prices start from as low as $260,000 for a two-bedroom home to $740,000 for a renovated ranch with a rambling layout. “Prices are rising to meet the demand for the area,” says Holli McCray, CEO of Home Marketing Group. “We’ve seen a lot of people move here in recent years and compete with 30 bids on a house.”
Asbury-Forks of the River earns a crime score of 2 out of a possible 10, according to the CAP Index. This score is significantly lower than the US national average score of 4.

Long-standing Knoxville academic institutions

The area’s schools are a cornerstone of the community, with establishments dating back to 1915. Students are zoned to attend Knox Public Schools, which includes Chilhowee Intermediate School for prekindergarten through fifth grade. Kids at Carter Middle School advance to the adjacent Carter High School, which is one of the oldest schools in the area. Starting as a farmhouse, Carter High is now a thriving institution offering after-school STEM clubs and a robust athletic program. All three schools receive an overall B-minus score from Niche.

Thoroughfares connect residents to downtown Knoxville

Tennessee State Route 168 runs north and south through Asbury-Forks of the River, connecting residents to larger thoroughfares like Interstate 40 and US Route 70 to the north and US Highway 441 to the south – all of which link to downtown Knoxville. Locals head 25 minutes south to the McGhee Tyson Airport for domestic flights.

Southern comforts and sweet treats

For groceries and essentials, residents may head to Food City on Asheville Highway or Dollar General. Major retailers like Target, Lowe’s and Sam's Club are located off Highway 25. Popular local franchise Aubrey’s Restaurant serves up southern comfort foods like their old-fashioned patty melt and North Carolina fried catfish. Residents can satiate their sweet tooth at Cruze Farm, a family-owned creamery churning out fresh ice cream with an assortment of flavors.

Green spaces and recreation at Forks of the River

Amidst the natural ambiance of Asbury-Forks of the River, the Forks of The River Park beckons with its open green spaces and recreational amenities. The park boasts several soccer fields that come alive on weekends as Ayso Region 1390 leagues showcase their skills. Families can revel in the joy of outdoor play at the expansive playground, while covered picnic pavilions provide a shaded setting for enjoying a sunny day.

Events celebrating history and Appalachian heritage

Dating back to 1797, the historic Ramsey House on Thorngrove Pike showcases one of the earliest known instances of Tennessee marble construction, hailed as the “finest house in Tennessee.” Ramsey House hosts vintage baseball games and art classes, inviting guests to immerse themselves in history and creativity. At the annual Ancient Sounds Music Festival, guests marvel at the sounds of Celtic and Appalachian folk music.
