Convenience and natural beauty in East Knoxville
Just seven miles east of Downtown Knoxville, Chilhowee Hills offers residents an older neighborhood with an easy commute. “East Knoxville sometimes gets a bit of a bad rap, but Chilhowee Hills is a nice area,” says Haley Van Edom, Realtor at the Van Edom Group at Realty Executives. “It’s close to downtown and it’s an easy drive in for work.” Combined with the beauty of the nearby Dogwood Trail, especially in the spring, Chilhowee Hills’ natural setting and convenience make it a homey neighborhood for many Knoxville families.
Older Chilhowee Hills homes
Laid out over rolling hills alongside old-growth trees, Chilhowee Hills includes homes that were built as early as the 1930s, though most were constructed in the 1950s. Styles include ranch and Cape Cod, while some brick cottages with remodeled interiors sit closer to the Holston Hills community and golf course. A smaller ranch home can go for around $200,000, while a spacious, updated cottage sells for $450,000.
Springtime on the Holston Hills Dogwood Trail
Residents of Chilhowee Hills have plenty of opportunities to enjoy the Appalachian scenery. The beginning of the Holston Hills Dogwood Trail is located on Chilhowee Drive in the neighborhood, and locals can walk alongside the pink markings in the road to view native dogwood trees, azaleas, rock gardens and other landscaped features in the adjacent Holston Hills neighborhood. “The Dogwood Trail is a big thing in the spring, as the trees start to bloom,” Van Edom says. For a playground, kids can scamper around the jungle gym in Thomas “Tank” Strickland Park, in the lot next to the neighborhood’s library branch.
Events and entertainment in Chilhowee Park
Just west of Chilhowee Hills, Chilhowee Park has entertainment for the whole family. Next to the park’s trails around Lake Ottosee, locals find the children’s science museum Muse Knoxville, as well as Zoo Knoxville, which features animal exhibits including elephants, lions, chimpanzees and tigers. On the other side of the park, the Jacob Building hosts exhibitions, while the Homer Hamilton Amphitheater has held concerts such as Joan Jett and Rick Springfield.
Easy commute to downtown Knoxville
Located just seven miles from downtown Knoxville, Chilhowee Hills features easy access to Interstate 40, one of the main arteries through the city. Knoxville Area Transit also serves the neighborhood, with bus stops throughout the area and a direct line to downtown. For longer trips, Chilhowee Hills is 20 miles from Knoxville’s McGhee Tyson Airport, which features regional service as well as flights to hubs such as Dallas-Fort Worth and Denver.
Education in Knox County schools
Chilhowee Hills is located in the Knox County Schools district, which received a B-plus grade from Niche. Kids attend either Ritta Elementary School, which was given a B-minus, or B-plus-rated Sunnyview Primary School and Chilhowee Intermediate, graded a B-minus. They then move on to B-minus-graded Holston Middle School before being split up again for high school at either the C-plus-rated Austin-East Magnet High School or Carter High School, given a B-minus. Austin-East is Knox County’s only Performing Arts Magnet High School, while Carter opened in 1915 and has served the community for over 100 years.
Big box stores on Asheville Highway
As a mainly residential neighborhood, Chilhowee Hills doesn’t have much shopping within it’s bounds. One stretch of Asheville Highway near the junction with Rutledge Pike functions as the area’s commercial center, featuring the Holston Shopping Center, as well as a Kroger for groceries and a Walgreens across the street for other essential items. Just down Asheville Highway, Habaneros Mexican is Chilhowee Hills’ best-loved restaurant by neighborhood residents. After dinner at Habaneros, locals head next door to Scott’s for ice cream.
