Tight-knit neighborhood near Fountain City shopping
Fountaincrest is a north Knoxville neighborhood just off Broadway, a major commercial corridor. This is an active neighborhood, not only because of the busy retail and restaurant scene but also because of the community amenities that bring residents together. As part of the Fountain City area, it's close to parks, cultural centers and neighborhood haunts, which give this area a small-town vibe within the larger city. It's a rare Knoxville suburb with sidewalks — one element contributing to a neighborly spirit. "Everyone is out walking, and they're extremely friendly," says Will Shankles, a Knoxville native and Realtor with Realty Executives Associates, who is active in the Fountaincrest area. "If you pass someone on the street, they're going to say 'hi' to you."
Updated Craftsman bungalows, cottages and Colonials with original features
Fountain City is known for its unique early 20th-century architecture, and Fountaincrest is no exception. This residential area has updated 1930s and 1940s homes, including Craftsman bungalows, Minimal Traditionals, cottages and Colonials with original features such as rounded entryways, brick chimneys and hardwood floors. "Most of them are not cookie-cutter," Shankles says. "If you want to hop in a car on a Sunday and look at cool houses, Fountain City is the place to do that." Prices range from $175,000 to $470,000. Many residents make use of large front porches with swinging benches. Lot sizes typically hover around a third of an acre. Front yards vary in size, with ornamental hedges, flower bushes and close-cut grass adding curb appeal throughout the neighborhood.
Fountain City Social is a neighborhood hangout
Fountain City's small business scene draws Knoxville residents near and far. Fountaincrest residents can walk to shops and restaurants on Broadway via sidewalks on Hillcrest Drive. Fountain City Social lives up to its name as a popular social spot hosting live performances, karaoke dance parties and trivia nights. This '80s-themed cocktail bar serves drinks such as the Wake Me Up Before You Go-Go espresso martini and a few food items such as pizza. It opened in 2021, replacing the former Casual Pint bar. "Even when it was Casual Pint, it was impressive to see how strong of a presence that little bar has as a family get-together spot," Shankles says. Kroger is a chain grocery option on Broadway, while Pratt's Country Store is a local option on Jacksboro Pike that sells seasonal produce, Amish dairy products and pantry essentials. At Sweet P's, locals enjoy barbecue classics such as brisket and mac and cheese from booths or the bar.
Fresh air and art at Fountain City Park
Green space is a focal point for Fountain City. Less than a mile north, Fountain City Park is a wooded area with several picnic shelters, a playground, open space and a natural spring flowing under the trees. The Fountain City Greenway is a paved pathway circling the park. The park is a community gathering space as the home of the Fountain City Lions Club and the Fountain City Art Center. The Art Center supports creatives with a gallery space, exhibits and classes. Nearby, the Fountain City duck pond is another neighborhood anchor, with the namesake fountain in the center.
Early college credits at Central High
Fountaincrest students are zoned for three Knox County Schools, which are about 1 mile away. Younger students can learn the fundamentals at Fountain City Elementary, which earns a B-minus from Niche. The school fosters creativity with an annual art show and weekly artist spotlights on social media. As they progress, students can attend Gresham Middle School, which earns a B. Teens typically attend the B-minus-rated Central High School. It's the district's oldest high school, dating back to 1906. Central High students can earn early college credits with Advanced Placement classes in various subjects such as biology, studio art drawing, English literature, U.S. government and psychology.
Food trucks and flower blossoms at the Dogwood Arts Festival
Community events add to Fountaincrest's hometown spirit. Just north, historic Gibbs Drive is a sought-after area for ice cream socials in the summer and trick-or-treating in October. "It's one of those streets that when you go through, you can tell residents really care about how their homes look, and everyone goes all out for holidays," Shankles says. Gibbs Drive participates in the Dogwood Arts Festival celebrations in the spring with food trucks, live music and flowers for purchase. The street is part of Knoxville's Dogwood Trails, noted for its double row of double row of fluffy, pink blooms.
Broadway leads to downtown Knoxville
Fountaincrest is fairly walkable, with an east-west sidewalk on Hillcrest Drive, and north-south sidewalks on Jacksboro Pike and Stanton Road. Not every road is walkable, and sidewalks disconnect in some areas. Broadway offers an easy connection to greater Knoxville. It leads directly to downtown Knoxville, about 8 miles south. The number 22 bus, via Knoxville Area Transit, stops on Broadway every 30 minutes. McGhee Tyson Airport is 20 miles south, with nonstop flights to more than 25 destinations across the U.S. North Knoxville Medical Center provides emergency care and other medical services, roughly 8 miles northwest.
