A typical slice of suburban Knoxville
Sevier Home is a big neighborhood in South Knoxville. Situated about 6 miles down the road from the city center, this area is imbued with historical significance – Tennessee’s first governor, John Sevier, lived here with Bonny Kate Sevier, Tennessee’s inaugural first lady. The convenient location makes Sevier Home a desirable community for homebuyers. “It’s not that far from Knoxville,” says Chris Morton, principal broker with Crye-Leike Realtors and Knoxville resident of 54 years. “Sevier Home is your typical Tennessee suburb, dotted with farmland and subdivisions.” Crisscrossed by narrow rural roads and featuring a mix of midcentury ranch-style homes and Colonial-inspired new construction, it’s easy to forget there’s anything in Sevier Home but the Smoky Mountains and the open blue skies.
Peacefully situated subdivisions
A mix of ranch-style homes on large yards and newly constructed subdivisions of Colonial-themed modern houses make up most of Sevier Home’s choices. “There are some new developments out that way,” Morton continues. “It’s pretty quiet, lots of big yards.” Typically, home prices range from about $340,000 to $485,000, depending on the age and style of the home. Larger homes and those with more acreage can sell close to $1 million. There are also plenty of lots available, priced between about $90,000 and $1.2 million, depending on acreage. The rolling green hills sit at a quiet remove from the rush of downtown, offering a peaceful escape for commuters.
Education and community in Knox County
Students in Sevier Home attend Bonny Kate Elementary School, graded B-minus by Niche, which partners with the Knox County 4H club for community outreach and education efforts. Students then move to South-Doyle Middle School closer to South Knoxville, which also gets a B-minus and is home to a winning basketball program for boys and girls. South-Doyle High School, rated C-plus, has a rugby team that has won five state championships.
The highway lifelines of Sevier Home
The rural nature of Sevier Home means that residents are dependent on driving. Governor John Sevier Highway is the neighborhood’s lifeline, connecting residents to Maryville Pike and McGhee Tyson Airport 11 miles west. Locals head east to Chapman Highway for access to shops, dining and downtown Knoxville just under 7 miles away.
Hungry along Chapman Highway
“You’ve got to get over to Chapman Highway to get any shopping or restaurants,” Morton says. Located 2 and a half miles east of Sevier Home, Chapman Highway provides access to all grocery and big-box stores. Lowe’s and Food City sit at the junction of Sevier and Chapman Highways, with Walmart less than a mile up from there. Ye Olde Steak House, a community landmark since 1968, also sits along Chapman, a rare find among fast-casual chains like Ruby Tuesday.
From French Memorial to the Urban Wilderness
French Memorial Park, directly in the neighborhood, is a pocket of curated nature trails and picnic shelters beside the Howard Pinkston Branch Library. Six miles away in South Knoxville lies the Urban Wilderness Gateway Park, a colossal, preserved forest with more than 50 miles of trails, a bike park and historic quarries.
The namesake of Sevier Home
The one notable destination inside Sevier Home is the Marble Springs Historic Site of Governor Sevier’s childhood home. This museum hosts educational programs, pie-making workshops, and yoga and meditation classes from nearby studios on the wooded, hilly grounds. Heading up the road to downtown Knoxville will give residents a taste of the city rush with the promise of a return to the suburban silence when all is said and done.
The quietude south of Marble City
People don’t move to Sevier Home for the amenities, but rather for the wide-open space and the convenience to Knoxville. The narrow asphalt roads cut through small mountains and across little creeks, and it is not uncommon to see a tractor going one way and a cyclist or jogger going the other. On spring weekends, residents can bike or drive to Old Town South Knoxville for a charming urban experience and come home to nothing but the sounds of bluebirds and towhees singing in the purple wisteria trees. As Knoxville continues to expand, Sevier Home is retaining its character as it sits on the cusp of this booming Smoky Mountain town.
