Older north Knoxville neighborhood convenient to Fountain City shopping
Smithwood's history extends back to 1839, when the original resident, John Smith, built the first brick home. Echoes of that history remain as Smithwood Baptist Church, which still has an active congregation today, was built on land donated by Smith. Today, Smithwood is an active, urban neighborhood intersected by North Broadway and the Tazewell Pike, commercial thoroughfares with shopping and dining options. Although Smithwood has an identity of its own, its location within the greater Fountain City area affords residents access to above-average schools and a community-oriented spirit thanks to events and longtime local businesses. "That area is very convenient to grocery stores and a unique part of Knoxville," says Kim Skiles, a Realtor with Reed Real Estate Pros who has been selling there for 13 years.
The median household income in Smithwood is approximately $65,721.

Coffee and books under the string lights at Fable Hollow
Smithwood is in the center of Fountain City's unique small business scene. Vintage clothing stores, boutiques and bookshops are located along the Tazewell Pike. Pratt's Country Store specializes in local produce, jams, Amish butter, and cheese. The seasonal selections include pumpkins for the fall and flowers for the spring. Fable Hollow Coffee and Bookshoppe is a whimsical space to sip a coffee and enjoy a book, with string lights and greenery draping from the ceiling. Bordering the neighborhood's west side, Broadway has chain restaurants, pharmacies, banks and auto care centers. About a mile and a half north near Fountain City Park, Litton's is a market, restaurant and bakery known for its cakes and burgers. "It's a family who has been in the area for a really long time," Skiles says. "Litton's has been there for as long as I can remember."
Fable Hollow Coffee has an excellent selection of book, gifts, and other items.
Pratt's Country Store sells fresh produce, dairy, and baked good.

Early 20th-century cottages with unique designs
Residential pockets are on either side of the Tazewell Pike, which cuts through the center of the neighborhood. Single-family homes, townhouses and apartments are among the housing options. Many homes were built from the 1920s through the 1940s and are smaller than average at around 1,350 square feet. Among the early 20th-century homes are Mediterranean-inspired cottages with red-tiled roofs and English-inspired versions with rounded doorways and brick chimneys. Lot sizes vary from house to house, and some have side driveways or detached garages. Decorative landscaping adds curb appeal to some properties. Single-family homes can range from $150,000 to $470,000. Townhouses on either side of the Tazewell Pike with two bedrooms and two and a half bathrooms range from $218,000 to $279,000. Homes on the neighborhood's west side may experience more noise from Broadway and the Tazewell Pike.

Peaceful green spaces in surrounding Fountain City
Although Smithwood itself is a busier area, parks and outdoor recreation are available elsewhere in Fountain City. A freshwater spring feeds the rocky creek that flows through Fountain City Park. First established in 1825, this wooded, shady park is popular with Fountain City locals and wildlife such as foxes, geese and ducks. It has a playground, several rentable shelters and a greenway looping around the perimeter. Also in the park, the Fountain City Art Center fosters creativity for all ages and skill levels with classes, exhibits and community events. One of Fountain City's defining features is the fountain and duck pond just south of the park. "You can go over there and go fishing — it's a sweet place to be in the middle of town but be able to get away," Skiles says.
Some Smithwood residents like to fish for bass at the Fountain City Lake.
