Whittle Springs
Tudor cottages and ranches
Single-family homes and apartments surround the golf course on quiet streets. Most date between the 1920s and 1950s, including Cape Cods and Craftsman bungalows. On Fairmont Boulevard, Tudor-inspired cottages overlook the fairway. These have unique features such as steeply gabled roofs, chimneys and rounded doorways. On Emoriland Boulevard, midcentury ranch-style homes have plenty of cover from mature trees. The neighborhood's north and south sides also have brick, single-story condos from the 2000s. Single-family homes range between $160,000 and $360,000, while condos hover between $218,000 and $320,000. Lots are around a quarter of an acre, often with the privacy of trees and shrubs. Walking and biking may be more challenging here, with hilly streets with no sidewalks. Residents on the neighborhood's north side may experience noise from Interstate 640.Knoxville’s first public golf course
Whittle Springs Golf Course is the largest green space in the neighborhood, with an 18-hole course and clubhouse. The course was once home to a grand hotel with a swimming pool, and events with golf greats such as Ben Hogan, Byron Nelson and Dow Finsterwald. Since the 1930s it has hosted the Knoxville City Amateur Championship. Today, the course is a more laid-back environment open to the public with tee times starting at $20. "A lot of college kids will go there to get a couple of rounds in," says Roy Nicaud, Realtor with Realty Executives Associates. The clubhouse sells golf merch and refreshments such as hot dogs, sandwiches, soft drinks and beer. There are other ways to enjoy the outdoors here. Two miles east, Alice Bell Park has a pool open to members. The park also has several baseball and softball diamonds that can be reserved. Within the neighborhood, Boright Park is a small green space on a grassy median, with swingsets and a playground for younger kids.
Dining in Fountain City and downtown Knoxville
Fountain City and downtown Knoxville are popular spots to shop and dine. North Broadway is Fountain City's main commercial strip, with chain restaurants and auto service centers. Yet the area is also known for unique, local spots. Pratt's Country Store is filled with flowers in the spring and pumpkins in the fall. This local spot is a go-to year-round for fresh produce, Amish dairy products and more. Litton's Market uses family recipes for its fresh baked goods, including the buns that top their cheeseburgers. Downtown Knoxville has a thriving dining scene with over 90 restaurants within one square mile. Boyd's Jig and Reel is a self-described musical pub serving Scottish staples and nightly live tunes.Career academies at Fulton High
Proximity to Knox County Schools is one perk of this neighborhood, with a full pipeline 2.5 miles away or closer. Younger students can learn the fundamentals at Spring Hill Elementary, which earns a C-plus from Niche. Located in the neighborhood, Whittle Springs Middle earns a B-minus. Here, the girls' volleyball team had a 7-0 record in the 2024 fall season. Teens may attend Fulton High, which also earns a B-minus. High schoolers can gain early insight into potential careers with three academies: communications, health and human services and public service.Events and activities at Zoo Knoxville
Knoxville's north side has family-friendly events and attractions. Four miles south of Whittle Springs is Zoo Knoxville, which has been “popular among Knoxville families for generations,” says Pete McClain, an affiliate broker with Realty Executives Associates who grew up in Knoxville. The zoo has various kid-friendly activities including a sit-down zipline, a mini train and a splash pad. It also hosts special events including Brew at the Zoo, a craft beer festival featuring 35 breweries. Boo! at the Zoo is a not-too-spooky Halloween event catering to younger kids and featuring trick-or-treating.Broadway and I-640 go to Knoxville
