Koloa offers modern convenience with historic farmland roots

Koloa is a blend of vintage charm and modern convenience between the ocean and forested foothills of Kauai. At its heart is the historic Old Koloa Town, established in 1835, with rows of flat-front shops reminiscent of a bygone era. Heading through Koloa toward the beach, you’re surrounded by picturesque farmland, indicative of its roots as the site of Hawaii’s first major sugar plantation. Lori Benkert, Broker-Owner with Waioli Properties says, “In addition to all the charming restaurants in Old Koloa Town, Koloa is also where you’ll find the Old Koloa Sugar Mill, and the island’s oldest church. At the same time, the new Shops at Koloa Village just opened with even more places to enjoy and one of the best grocery stores on the south shore.”

Traditional Hawaiian ranch style homes and new construction options

Koloa’s residential streets are lined with varying sizes of traditional Hawaiian ranch style homes often painted in pleasant sky, water and earth tones. Modern plantation-style homes priced at around $875,000 are prevalent, and some homes are elevated to offer aboveground storm protection. The neighborhood also includes the occasional Craftsman bungalow, and exteriors are a mix of siding and stone. New construction homes in Koloa Estates feature high ceilings, grand windows and expansive outdoor entertaining space, for around $4.2 million.

Koloa's public schools and library provide quality education

Your students can start their public-school education at Koloa Elementary, which earns a B+ grade from Niche and is outfitted with expansive outdoor play areas. Nearby, the Koloa Public and School Library has been serving Koloa Elementary students and the communities of Koloa, Poipu, Kukuila, Omao, Lawai and Kalaheo since 1976. Students move on to Chiefess Kamakahelei Middle and Kauai High schools, both earning an overall B grade from Niche.

Koloa's parks and outdoor adventures

At your neighborhood Anne Knudsen Park, sometimes referred to as Koloa Park, you can meet up for tennis, pickleball or youth league baseball games. The Koloa Farmers Market is also hosted here on the Koloa Ball Park, and when it’s open on Mondays, you can peruse a variety of local produce. One of Koloa’s largest bodies of water, the Waita Reservoir, was built in the community in the early 1900s to supply local sugar cane farms. And because it still supplies local agriculture today, it’s a protected vital resource in Koloa. If you’d like an opportunity to get close to Waita, you can book a guided three-hour ATV tour at Aloha Kauai Tours in central Koloa. Your adventure includes 15 miles of off-roading trails, and treats you to beautiful ocean views, movie sites, the Tree Tunnel corridor of more than 500 eucalyptus trees, and the Waita Reservoir.

Where to eat out or grocery shop in Koloa

“My favorite places to eat in Koloa,” says Benkert, “are La Spezia, Koloa Fish Market and Dark Horse Coffee Roasters. La Spezia serves the best Italian fare around and Koloa Fish Market has some of the freshest poke, which is why the line can be long at lunchtime.” Dark Horse Coffee, which launched in 2013 in California, makes its Hawaii debut in Old Koloa Town. In their swanky new location, creative selections include a signature espresso dubbed “The Champ.” Sports lovers appreciate Friendly Waves for its open-air ambience, locally sourced foods and 16 streaming televisions. Next door, you can indulge in ice cream, shave ice, gourmet shakes or coffee at Mango’s.

Big Save is a big deal in Koloa, as the neighborhood’s largest grocery resource with six locations across Kauai. You can also head into the barn-red and stonework entrance of the family-owned Sueoka Market to pick up Asian groceries, snacks, and plate lunches. Sueoka Market, also known as Sueoka Store, has been a community stalwart since the 1930s. And in keeping with its old-meets-new aura, your Koloa Town is also equipped with a contemporary Kauai Juice Co. offering cold-pressed elixirs using locally farmed vegetables and fruits. In 2018, the husband-and-wife-owned Kauai Juice Co. was named the sixth fastest growing company in all of Hawaii.
