Along Pennsylvania Route 61 in the state’s Anthracite Coal Region is the borough of Kulpmont, a small rural hamlet of nearly 2,800 residents packed in one square mile, according to the U.S. Census Bureau’s 2020 report. The borough’s streets are laid out in a grid-style formation, with north-south roads numbered one through 16. While Kulpmont is primarily residential, locals can still find a handful of neighborhood eateries and convenience stores lining Route 61 and 10th Street. According to the CAP Index, Kulpmont has an overall Crime Score of 3 out of 10, slightly lower than the national average of 4.

Hiking trails are scattered throughout the Northumberland County countryside and the mountain ranges surrounding Kulpmont.

Kulpmont’s convenience stores and local businesses are mostly scattered along Route 61, while neighborhood restaurants trail up and down 10th Street in the middle of the borough. Dining options range from pizzerias like Scicchitano’s Buono Pizza to laid-back sports pubs like End Zone Bar and Grill. Residents can drive 5 minutes down the road to get to Walmart Supercenter and The Plaza at Coal Township, a shopping center with an ALDI grocery store, Tractor Supply Co. and Dollar General.
Access to Pennsylvania Route 61
While Kulpmont is a primarily car-dependent community, there are a few fixed bus routes that run through the area operated by the Lower Anthracite Transit System, or LATS. Pennsylvania Route 61 is the borough’s arterial thoroughfare, connecting residents to the borough of Mount Carmel, 4 miles east, and the city of Shamokin, 5 miles west. The nearest airport, Harrisburg International Airport, is less than 70 miles from the borough. The Geisinger Shamokin Area Community Hospital offers 24-hour emergency room services approximately 6 miles from Kulpmont.
