Friendly and rural La Feria

Though La Feria is a rural neighborhood, the people here are very community oriented, and many neighbors see one another while out shopping, eating or playing at the various playgrounds and the public pool. Compared to much of Texas, housing here is usually priced on the lower end, but many new constructions might be the reason for rising costs. Farming and agriculture are also important here, so with a community garden and several farms, residents will get glimpses of livestock and horses. The La Feria Independent School District is well-rated and a big part of this close-knit community.

New constructions and established ranch styles

Contemporary new constructions are beginning to emerge in La Feria. Sometimes built on repurposed farmland, these custom homes sit near the country on nice lots with wide driveways and can cost upwards of $350,000. Well-established ranch-style homes in town can cost between $150,000 and $250,000 but generally have less than an acre of land. Many lots and former farmland are for sale in the area, so there are opportunities for development and customizing a dream home.

Close community ties at the Rec Center and Sports Complex

The community seems to be at the center of everything that La Feria does. The La Feria Recreation Center hosts family movie nights and free adult and teen dancing and fitness classes, such as Zumba, line dancing and Salsa. “We have a good community here,” says Saul Villarreal, manager of the Stars Drive-in Restaurant on North Main St. “The people are very friendly, and they all come together for community events at the center.” Saul also mentioned that band nights, in particular, are a favorite. Little bands and groups will sometimes play at the Veterans Memorial Park and Sports Complex. “They also have the New Year and Fourth-of-July fireworks shows there, which is really exciting for the area,” Villarreal says. “There’s always a little bit of something for everybody.”

Close to town is Expressway 83, where residents can drive 9 miles east to Harlingen or 6 miles west to Mercedes. 15 miles east along that same route is the Valley International Airport, and while there doesn’t seem to be a bus line in La Feria, the town is only 2 or 3 miles across, so residents can walk or bike on quiet streets and sidewalks.

Sunny days in La Feria
