Practicality amid luxury

While most neighborhoods in the upscale, seaside community of La Jolla boast eclectic, custom-built homes that often exceed $10 million, La Jolla Heights stands out as a more modest (still, luxurious) comparatively affordable enclave where architecture does not take center stage. As La Jolla-based Realtor Whitney Peyser with Compass notes, "You really can't go wrong with any La Jolla neighborhood, but La Jolla Heights is one of the most practical for families. It's private and tucked away but still puts you central to great shopping, schools and healthcare." Residents here are minutes away from the sparkling coastline, waterfront dining and the dynamic Downtown San Diego.

Comparatively affordable La Jolla homes

Set atop a hill between La Jolla Shores and La Jolla Village, the neighborhood is accessed by the main roads, La Jolla Scenic Way and La Jolla Scenic Drive. Homes are set into smaller, winding streets, fronted by well-manicured gardens and topiary. Many residences offer sweeping views of the cityscape, stretching from the downtown skyline to the ocean. Large Spanish and Tuscan-style homes are sprinkled throughout, built in the early 2000s, but smaller builds consisting of 1960s ranch-style homes can be found on each street. Older homes typically range from $1.8 million to $2.5 million, while the newer, larger residences fetch between $4.5 million and $6 million.

Watch the paragliders soar through Torrey Pines

Mount Soledad Memorial Park, marked by a towering cross honoring the nation’s veterans, attracts hundreds of thousands of visitors annually – one of the most popular attractions in San Diego. The park features native flora, walking trails and panoramic ocean and city views. When residents want to hit the beach, all they have to do is head downhill to enjoy miles of pristine coastline. The famous Torrey Pines Gliderport is 5 miles up the coastline, a spot for paragliding and hang gliding over La Jolla’s bright blue shores. Within La Jolla Heights, Cliffridge Park is primarily used for baseball practice, but offers unobstructed ocean views.
