Historic Spanish-Tewa farming village between Santa Fe and Los Alamos

About 16 miles north of Santa Fe and 19 miles east of Los Alamos, Cuyamungue is a farming village in the Pojoaque Reservation, surrounded by Nambe Falls and the Sangre de Cristo Mountains. Originally inhabited by Tewa Indians between the 1300s and 1500s, Cuyamungue became a community of Spanish farmers in the late 17th century; today, local businesses like Gabriel’s Mexican restaurant, the Poeh Cultural Center, and the Buffalo Thunder Resort Casino represent the community's Hispanic and native cultures. Cuyamungue continues to attract newcomers with its historic, rural character and convenient location. “Many families in Cuyamungue have farmed here for generations," says Lise Knouse, a Santa Fe local and experienced Broker Owner with Keller Williams, "but a lot of people are moving here because it's perfectly between Santa Fe’s shopping options and work at the Los Alamos National Laboratory.”

Northern New Mexico and Santa Fe Homes on the Rio Tesuque

Set on dirt roads peppered with cottonwood trees, Cuyamungue’s homes sit on long, narrow lots that stretch to the Rio Tesuque, the Arroyo Ancha, or irrigation ditches called acequias. Though farming is no longer a way of life here, many families continue to garden or tend fruit orchards along the river. Most properties here are Northern New Mexico-style homes from the 1960s to ‘80s, featuring green, steeply pitched metal roofs, stucco exteriors and ocotillo fencing. Some of these Northern New Mexico-style homes feature recent renovations, and lots range from a quarter-acre to upward of 2 acres; prices range from $170,000 to $550,000. Santa Fe-style homes from the 1950s to 2010s dot the area, often featuring tan stucco exteriors, colorful wood molding and flat roofs supported by exposed wooden beams called vigas; lots range from a quarter-acre to 1 acre, and prices range from $490,000 to $600,000. Undeveloped land is also available in Cuyamungue, with 1-acre lots ranging from $90,000 to $160,000, depending on their water rights.

Dry riverbeds and scenic waterfalls nearby

High desert scenery and natural spaces are interwoven with Cuyamungue’s farmlands. “The Rio Tesuque is usually dry, so I’ve had clients telling me about how they like to walk along the riverbed," Knouse says. "But a wet spring can bring the river waters right back.” Around 11 miles east in the Sangre de Cristo foothills, residents can enjoy the cool waters and views of Nambe Falls. Here, the quarter-mile Dry Trail climbs to an overlook of Nambe’s tiered waterfalls, and the Wet Trail bends around pinyon trees and creeks to the waterfalls’ pools. The Towa Golf Club at Buffalo Thunder also lies directly beside Cuyamungue, featuring three nine-hole courses with panoramic desert and mountain views.
