La Paloma has rural living with San Benito’s perks nearby
La Paloma is a tiny Cameron County community 5 miles from Mexico’s border and part of San Benito’s southern, more agricultural section. La Paloma’s roughly 2,800 residents enjoy the same perks as those living in San Benito, like its school district and retailers and events, but can live in a quieter, more rural setting.
Manufactured and New Traditional homes on large lots
La Paloma’s residential section has rural roads lined with manufactured, ranch-style and New Traditional homes on spacious grass-covered lawns. Some properties span multiple acres. Mature trees dot front and backyards, and most homes are surrounded by low fences. Prices typically range from $210,000 to $340,000. Land is also available, most in quarter- and half-acre lots, ranging from $48,000 to $60,000.
San Benito ISD schools range from C-plus to B-minus ratings
San Benito Consolidated Independent School District serves the community, offers intra-district transfer and has a B-minus rating on Niche. The schools zoned to the area are C-plus-rated La Paloma Elementary, C-plus-rated Riverside Middle, C-plus-rated Veterans Memorial Academy, which serves ninth grade, and B-minus-rated San Benito High, which serves 10th through 12th grades. San Benito Consolidated ISD recently approved new guidelines that define ways to prevent student bullying and outlines intervention methods.
Parks nearby offer trails, sports fields and playgrounds
Residents head to nearby El Ranchito County Park for its multi-use field, walking trail, playground, soccer field and basketball court. Also nearby are El Ranchito County Park, which features a baseball diamond, picnic tables and a playground, and part of the Las Palomas Wildlife Management Area, which offers hunting and hiking.
Local shops and eateries line Military Highway
Military Highway is dotted with a handful of retailers and services. Residents pick up groceries and essentials at Family Dollar and local shop Danny’s Groceries. Local spot Carniceria El Toro sells cuts of fresh meat and prepared Mexican dishes. Taqueria Los Dos Compadres is a local spot that serves a mix of Mexican and American classics like tacos and hamburgers. San Benito, about 8 miles away, and Harlingen, about 15 miles away, has more shopping and dining options. The closest hospital, Harlingen Medical Center, is also in Harlingen.
Annual events in San Benito include music, vendors and fireworks
Residents head to San Benito for annual events like ResacaFest, a Fourth of July celebration with local vendors, live entertainment and fireworks; and Market Days on Historic Robertson Street, a market with local vendors and live music.
Military Highway connects the area to nearby cities and towns
Because La Paloma doesn’t have public transportation, residents get around by car. Military Highway runs along the community’s south side and connects to nearby cities and towns. Military Highway also leads to U.S. Customs and border checkpoint into Mexico, about 5 miles away.
High winds and hail are typical during heavy rainstorms
While tornadoes and hurricanes are possible, they are uncommon. More common are severe rainstorms that include high winds, hail and flooding. Homeowners can purchase flood insurance through FEMA’s National Flood Insurance Program.
