La Pine is a quiet mountain city on the Deschutes River

Set along the gentle waters of the Little Deschutes River Valley, La Pine is a quiet mountain city of around 2,500 people. Known for its natural beauty and outdoor recreation, the area is surrounded by alpine lakes, untouched woodlands and the peaks of the Cascades. "What draws people to the area is usually a vacation at Sunriver or Crater Lake," says Jeannine Earls, La Pine's mayor. "Then they find out we're more affordable and less busy. They come to play and end up for the stay." Though retirees are the majority of the population, that's beginning to change. "Families are starting to boom around the area," Earls says. "Bend's getting expensive, so they move here to get more for their money."
